Album Review: Shooting Pigeons – City of Peace EP

image‘City Of Peace’ was well and truly an exercise in patience for me. You know its bad when you find yourself unable to listen to a four track EP in one sitting. Shooting Pigeons meander somewhere between Arctic Monkeys and Bloc Party, two bands whom I enjoy, but Shooting Pigeons never find a footing to make themselves seem anything more than another bland British indie band.

Opener ‘Billiken’ has a slightly interesting introduction, before kicking fully into itself, the lyrics feel a little uninspired and whilst the instrumentation and vocals are decent, it just feels a little stagnant and unimaginative. Vocalist Jack Corcoran doesn’t really seem interested in the words he’s singing, which for me is a massive problem that continues to repeat throughout.

‘Hindsight (Dutch)’ is next, its more of the same, lyrics about going out and getting in a fight, it’s typical working class stuff, and I can’t help but feel it’s time has passed. Perhaps in 2007 when this stuff was huge, when The Kooks and Pigeon Detectives ruled the roost, it would sound more relevant.

Next up is ‘Dirt Poor’ this is the track that I found the most tedious. It thuds along to that jangly rhythm we’ve heard so many times, it honestly sounds like it was written in about 20 minutes by selecting clichéd parts, sticking them together and shouting about over the top of it.

The closing track ‘City Of Peace’ is probably the best effort on Shooting Pigeons‘ debut. It’s an all round slower track, with some great melodies within the instrumentation, but it doesn’t make up for the previous three songs, not even close. However, it has it’s own downfall in that It’s just the typical ballad that these types of bands stick on records to show they can slow the pace down. Shooting pigeons? I wish somebody would shoot me as to avoid having to listen to it ever again.
