As one of the biggest bands to emerge from the UK rock scene in the last decade Surrey quintet You Me At Six are back to cement their status with sixth studio album ‘Night People’. After 2014’s ‘Cavalier Youth’ topped the UK albums charts, You Me At Six have a reputation to uphold. Have recent endeavours into the world of politics as well as a shift in sound compromised an album highly anticipated by a legion of long standing fans? The answer is a resounding no.
From the start ‘Night People’ is exactly what it needs to be. Every band wants to evolve and grow but some struggle to do this while keeping true to their original vision. You Me At Six are not one of those bands. There are familiar elements throughout these ten tracks mixed with a sound somewhat sleazier than previous efforts.
Classic rock and hip-hop influences can be heard from the very top with lead single and title track ‘Night People’ acting as a more than fitting introduction. ‘Plus One’ and ‘Take on the World’ really showcase Josh Franceschi’s vocal range and ability while tracks like ‘Brand New’ are “classic” You Me At Six, cleverly written pop punk destined for the charts.
As expected the production is absolutely flawless. Recorded in Nashville at Black Bird Studios with Grammy award-winner Jacquire King (Kings Of Leon, James Bay), ‘Night People’ could be poised to add to the ever growing award list for both band and producer.
There really are no negatives to ‘Night People’. It shows a progressive, thoughtful band with a career that will thrive on to new heights with every album. With a real ability and craftsmanship for memorable sing along pop songs and a fan base encompassing all ages and genres, there are no doubts that You Me At Six will continue to sit at the very pinnacle of the UK rock scene for many years to come.
