Since starting his Wicca Phase Springs Eternal project over a decade ago, Adam Andrzejewski (formerly McIlwee) has evolved from emo-rap to darkwave to post-punk. However, the Pennsylvania-based singer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist is set to reinvent himself again. His upcoming album, ‘Mossy Oak Shadow,’ sees Andrzejewski pivot into alt-country/indie folk territory.
The album was announced today (Monday, July 14th) along with the release of two singles. Both ‘Horseback’ and ‘Enchantment’ set the raw, longing tone ‘Mossy Oak Shadow’ promises to showcase. They swoon with slide guitars and lyrical yearning. Nevertheless, no matter the style or genre, it’s clear Andrzejewski is committed to using Wicca Phase Springs Eternal as his creative umbrella. It allows him to transition without hesitation.
“I always kind of thought that as long as I have the Wicca Phase Springs Eternal name that I can do whatever I want,” Andrzejewski explains. “The name provides a framework for the lyrics and aesthetics of the project–my songwriting with a mystical overlay to it–and as long as I can make something work within that, then the genre doesn’t totally matter.”
Recorded live with producer/engineer Ben Greenberg (Depeche Mode, Show Me The Body), accompanied by only a drummer (Ryan Jewell) and keyboardist (David Moore), ‘Mossy Oak Shadow’ sees WPSE committed to a country-folk sound. However, as Adam states in a press bio, using acoustic guitars isn’t something new for WPSE.
“There’s always been acoustic songs on my records but usually they’re in the context of a beat-based Wicca Phase album. I think the idea here was to just kind of start fresh and go hard in this other direction,” he says. “The temptation is to call it a country record, I don’t really think it’s that–but there’s acoustic guitar and slide guitar, and I think my interests and themes do have elements of country in sort of an archetypical way.”
The album also features guest vocals from Ethel Cain on a track called ‘Meet Me Anywhere’.
‘Mossy Oak Shadow’ is released on September 19th via Run For Cover Records.
