{"id":100161,"date":"2025-09-11T14:00:18","date_gmt":"2025-09-11T13:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/?p=100161"},"modified":"2025-09-10T22:48:02","modified_gmt":"2025-09-10T21:48:02","slug":"review-saturdays-at-your-place-these-things-happen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/review-saturdays-at-your-place-these-things-happen\/","title":{"rendered":"Review: saturdays at your place &#8211; These Things Happen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since emerging from their hometown of Kalamazoo, Michigan,\u00a0<strong>saturdays at your place<\/strong> (sayp) have firmly positioned themselves as &#8220;ones to watch&#8221; in the midwestern emo scene. 2023 EP,\u00a0<em>&#8216;always cloudy&#8217; <\/em>built on what 2021&#8217;s debut full-length, <em>&#8216;Something Worth Celebrating&#8217; <\/em>founded. In turn, it elevated their reputation due to the trio&#8217;s ability to blend midwestern emo tropes with melodic sensibilities. However, lyrically, it saw them seek out help with growing up. As they return with their second album,\u00a0<em>&#8216;These Things Happen,&#8217;<\/em> Esden Stafne (vocals\/bass), Gabe Wood (vocals\/drums), and Mitch Gulish (guitar) look to take ownership of their adulthood.<\/p>\n<p>From the outset, they look to set a comfortable tone with the pairing of\u00a0<em>&#8216;Welcome&#8217;<\/em> and\u00a0<em>&#8216;cross my heart&#8217;<\/em>. Light pianos segue into a rampant, bouncy blast of emo pop-punk. Stafne&#8217;s words of longing and regret exemplify what\u00a0<strong>sayp<\/strong> are all about. Themes of mental health struggles, isolation, loss, and internal conflict are threaded throughout these ten tracks.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8216;waste away&#8217;<\/em> maintains this tone through Stafne&#8217;s exhausted mindset, as he reaches a breaking point amidst dealing with depression. Alongside Gabe Wood, they provide a solid rhythm section while Gulish&#8217;s twiddly guitars tinker away in the verses. This emotional heaviness continues throughout the album, complementing their reliable emo sound.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"saturdays at your place - waste away (Official Music Video)\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vzHNVRmsgpM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The stripped-back and upbeat tone of <em>&#8216;what am I supposed to do?&#8217;<\/em> is countered by the lyrical vulnerability, giving way to driving power chords as Stafne screams <em>&#8220;Can\u2019t we all just get along.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>For the most part, <strong>sayp<\/strong>&#8216;s sound could be considered breezy, firmly living in an assured space that is delivered with charm. Tracks such as\u00a0<em>&#8216;I\u2019d rather be in michigan&#8217;<\/em> and\u00a0<em>&#8216;forest bubbles&#8217;<\/em> showcase a raw, lo-fi sound that, at times, is blissful in its execution. Yet the album&#8217;s emotional range becomes most evident in its hopeful moments.<\/p>\n<p>The late album highlight, <em>&#8216;stay&#8217;<\/em> thrives with its upbeat energy. It leans into the hint of hope that seeps through. Although Stafne admits to\u00a0<em>&#8220;not getting any better,&#8221;\u00a0<\/em>he pleads to resolve a failing relationship. Similarly, <em>&#8216;strawberry&#8217;<\/em> brings some optimism to the table as Esden finds comfort in companionship, with soothing <em>&#8220;oohs&#8221;<\/em>s and<em> &#8220;ahhhs&#8221;s<\/em>\u00a0elevating its lighter tone. It&#8217;s a credit to the trio for writing a set of songs that feel honest and relatable. At times, the delivery can be diaristic (<em>&#8216;loon mobile pt. 3&#8217;<\/em>) and at others they&#8217;re compelling storytellers (<em>&#8216;i give in&#8217;<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>Overall, they don&#8217;t offer easy answers, yet <em>&#8216;These Things Happen&#8217;<\/em> is a palatable set of emo tracks. <strong>saturdays at your place\u00a0<\/strong>excel at pairing comforting relatability with pleasing melodic flair.
