Having played together since their teens, vocalist\/guitarist Markus Hentunen, bassist Eero Maijala, and drummer Janne Mieskonen arrive fully formed on their debut album.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Landing on prog-rock powerhouse InsideOutMusic feels like a natural fit, as<em> &#8216;Innerdeeps&#8217;<\/em> blends progressive metal dexterity with flashes of metalcore bite and orchestral grandeur. The result is often monumental. <em>&#8216;Release Your Shadow&#8217;<\/em> and <em>&#8216;Bloodflower&#8217;<\/em> soar on Hentunen\u2019s commanding vocal range and the trio\u2019s tight musicianship, while &#8216;<em>Samsara&#8217;<\/em> charges forward on Mieskonen\u2019s rhythmic precision and spiky guitar work.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the label company they keep,\u00a0<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><strong>Royal Sorrow<\/strong>&#8216;s capabilities are versatile<\/span>. At times, they can be technically sharp and proficient (<em>&#8216;Metrograve&#8217;<\/em>), or thrive in the rigid alt-metal of\u00a0<em>&#8216;Survival Complex&#8217;. <\/em>Meanwhile, foreboding piano keys welcome\u00a0<em>&#8216;Looking Glass,&#8217;<\/em> providing a rich and spacious moment of introspection. Its brooding build is well-paced, allowing Hentunen&#8217;s controlled, soaring voice to purposely lead. Later on, the closing title track hints at their pop sensibilities, producing an empowering finale.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Royal Sorrow - Survival Complex (Official Video)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wC0fzHzxePM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Lyrically, the trio deliver a psychological arc. It initially recognises isolation and existential anxiety. Opening track,\u00a0<em>&#8216;Let Go&#8217;<\/em> sees Markus reflect on being <em>&#8220;Half a person \/ Half a shell&#8221;<\/em>.\u00a0 The thematic mood moves into confrontational territory as the band takes on suppressed emotions, toxic relationships (<em>&#8216;Bloodflower&#8217;<\/em>) and hidden aspects of their personality (<em>Release Your Shadow&#8217;<\/em>). The final run of tracks rides on a trend of acceptance, even if it means surrendering to destructive forces (see\u00a0<em>&#8216;Give In&#8217;<\/em>).\u00a0When it&#8217;s all brought together, it highlights <strong>Royal Sorrow<\/strong>&#8216;s maturity and assured ability to deliver dynamic, thoughtful alt-metal and prog rock. While thematically, they tow a line that is personal to all involved, while also being relatable.<\/p>\n<p>For a debut, it&#8217;s an impressive statement of intent that positions <strong>Royal Sorrow<\/strong> as a band capable of turning internal struggles into anthemic, universal art. Their assured musicianship and sophisticated songwriting transcend typical prog and alt-metal boundaries. They&#8217;re as comfortable crafting soaring orchestral moments as they are delivering metalcore bite or subtle pop hooks.
