On record, they&#8217;ve received praise for their use of melody, ferocity, and technical dexterity (for example,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/review-greyhaven-empty-black\/\">2018&#8217;s <em>&#8216;Empty Black&#8217;<\/em> received full marks from us<\/a>). While it has allowed the quartet to build a following, you can&#8217;t help but feel they&#8217;re a band that\u00a0<em>should<\/em> be talked about more.<\/p>\n<p>Their fourth album,\u00a0<em>&#8216;Keep It Quiet,&#8217;<\/em> arrives three years after the release of\u00a0<em>&#8216;This Bright and Beautiful World<\/em><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">. &#8216;<\/span>\u00a0Having leaned more into melodic territory last time out, the aim on here is to expand their\u00a0sonic palette. On paper, it&#8217;s a clich\u00e9 goal to have, yet for <strong>Greyhaven,<\/strong> it might be the missing ingredient to elevate them to their rightful spot.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside Will Putney&#8217;s production work, vocalist Brent Mills, guitarist Nick Spencer, bassist Johnny Muench, and drummer Ethan Spray prove to be a solid unit. From the outset, Spencer&#8217;s scrappy guitar slices through alongside Mills&#8217; screams on <em>&#8216;Prelude: Evening Star&#8217;<\/em> before\u00a0<em>&#8216;Shatter And Burst&#8217;<\/em> sees Spray deliver a kinetic rush while Muench assists with the controlled chaos. It also highlights Mills&#8217; versatile delivery. One moment, he&#8217;s venomous and rabid, the next, providing soaring rock hooks. It sets the bar high for the rest of the record.\u00a0\u00a0Thankfully, cuts such as\u00a0<em>&#8216;Burn A Miracle&#8217;<\/em> and\u00a0<em>&#8216;Where The Light Leaves Us&#8217;<\/em> soon show up to match the momentous scale. The latter erupts with fury and angular guitars before Mills comfortably shifts into the role of melodic singer.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Greyhaven - Burn A Miracle (Official Music Video)\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WPD5Du3aDRI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Greyhaven<\/strong>&#8216;s execution is never straightforward or dumbed down. For all the bold choruses songs like <em>&#8216;Night in October&#8217;<\/em> and\u00a0<em>&#8216;Diamond To Diamond&#8217;\u00a0<\/em>serve up, there&#8217;s an off-kilter undertone. It&#8217;s here where the widened sonic palette rears its head. Whether it&#8217;s Spencer&#8217;s trepidatious guitar lines on <em>&#8216;Night in October&#8217;\u00a0<\/em>or the atmospheric drift into the bombastic surge heard on \u00a0<em>&#8216;Diamond To Diamond&#8217;<\/em>. Meanwhile, the breezy transition to ravenous destructure on <em>&#8216;From The Backseat Of A Moving Car&#8217;<\/em> is a late album highlight, again partly due to the technical execution of\u00a0 Spencer, Muench, and Spray.\u00a0In between, there are moments of refined frenzy.\u00a0<em>&#8216;Satellite In Love&#8217;<\/em> charges in with Spray&#8217;s dense low-end fills and an overall stomping groove.<\/p>\n<p>Even when they enter passionate hard rock territory on\u00a0<em>&#8216;Technicolor Blues&#8217;<\/em>, there&#8217;s a subtle uneasiness to its presentation. Partly due to Mills&#8217; vulnerable lyrics, <em>&#8220;take apart and take a look at my h\u0435art, I never wanted to be found, It takes a lot to take a look at me<\/em> now.&#8221; With its steady acoustic build and sustained guitar lines, it ideally takes its place as the album&#8217;s centrepiece.<\/p>\n<p>It is that same vulnerability that threads <em>&#8216;Keep It Quiet&#8217;<\/em> together. Its eleven songs allow Mills to open up about his internal struggles directly, rather than shielding them in abstractness. It makes moments such as <em>&#8216;Burn A Miracle&#8217;, &#8216;Diamond To Diamond &#8216;, <\/em>and\u00a0<em>&#8216;Cemetery Sun&#8217;<\/em> hit that bit sharper.<\/p>\n<p>Whether or not\u00a0<em>&#8216;Keep It Quiet&#8217;<\/em> is the breakthrough\u00a0<strong>Greyhaven<\/strong> deserves remains to be seen. However, it is without a doubt their most focused offering yet.
