It sees the quintet charge through with Jono Hawkey&#8217;s biting screams and\u00a0Jarod McLaren and Oliver Butler&#8217;s chunky guitars. While bassist Andrew Martin and drummer Jack Van Vliet round out the track&#8217;s density and energetic ferocity.<\/p>\n<p>With <i>&#8216;The Light We Chase&#8217;\u00a0<\/i>thematically taking a reflective approach,\u00a0<em>&#8216;Out of Reach&#8217;<\/em>s blistering rush is complemented by an internal doubt of chasing personal goals.\u00a0<em>\u201c\u2018<span class=\"il\">Out Of Reach<\/span>\u2019 stems from questioning whether the pursuit is worth it, and the dissatisfaction that can come when striving towards a goal,&#8221;<\/em> <strong>Bloom<\/strong> explains. <em>&#8220;The idea that the goalposts are always moving is at the root of the song, opening with the lyrics \u2018Never satisfied, I always push to have it all\u2019. Imagery of rot and ash drive the track forward, and Jono\u2019s switch to clean vocals in the chorus \u2018spit out the taste of\u2019 a dream that has become a tragedy. Their evolution from post-rock to shoegaze has been organic. Their new single,\u00a0<em>&#8216;Hole in My Head&#8217;<\/em> exemplifies the North West quartet&#8217;s ability to deliver immersive soundscapes. Utilising slide guitars and ruminating in a grunge-like skin, it sees\u00a0<strong>Flycatcher<\/strong> maintain the twangy indie rock sound that made previous singles <a href=\"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/flycatcher-flood\/\">&#8216;Flood&#8217;<\/a> and\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/flycatcher-wrench\/\">&#8216;Truth&#8217;<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>so favourable.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a comforting consistency to what the four-piece do. It&#8217;s one that borders on being simple yet effective through its warm execution. The alt-metal project spearheaded by Hunter Young returns with a bruising, personal statement as he reflects on a life-changing medical condition.<\/p>\n<p>With its rugged alt-metal spine<span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"> and an underpinned industrial element, <em>&#8216;Half-Life&#8217;<\/em> is a crushing and raw number,<\/span>\u00a0riddled with catharsis.<em> &#8220;&#8216;Half-Life&#8217; was one of the first songs written after I received a life-changing medical diagnosis and was forced to grieve losing the person that I thought I was and had identified as for most of my sentient life,&#8221;<\/em> Young shares.<em> &#8220;It was a devastating blow to an already-tarnished nervous system. This song and subsequent songs were my way of coping and writing an obituary for the person I lost in that doctor&#8217;s office.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Among the challenges Hunter has faced is the notion that <strong>Moodring<\/strong> has become a solo project, unable to tour, yet it leaves endless possibilities as Young works with different collaborators.\u00a0<em>&#8216;Half-Life&#8217;<\/em> maintains the intensity of past releases yet serves as a reintroduction to <strong>Moodring<\/strong>. It sees Edkins pair up fuzzy guitars with a buoyant message. <em>&#8220;\u2018Forever Elsewhere\u2019 is the most optimistic song I\u2019ve written to date. I wanted to send an unequivocal positive message into the world,&#8221;<\/em> says Alex. <em>&#8220;The line \u2018Love, it will come,\u2019 summarises the overall theme: if things feel hopeless and the world is bleak, don\u2019t give up, keep pushing. It&#8217;s a riotous blast of hardcore punk, distilled into a distorted and fierce rampage.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;The title encapsulates the meaning of the song; the arrogance of youth, the consequence of misplaced effort, and watching someone wilfully go down a sad road,&#8221;<\/em> vocalist and guitarist Ois\u00edn Walsh explains. Steve Albini once said something about the music industry that has always stuck with me because it applies to life in general. He said, <em>\u201cIf you can understand somebody else\u2019s mistake and not make it, then you\u2019re ahead of the game.\u201d \u2018Couldn\u2019t Be Told\u2019 is ultimately about trying to learn from others\u2019 mistakes.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8216;Couldn&#8217;t Be Told&#8217;\u00a0<\/em>bites down on the heaviest that June&#8217;s <em>&#8216;Hatchet Man&#8217;<\/em> EP hinted at.
