For the Berkshire belters, the \u2018Year Of The Jackal\u2019<\/em> has been one of their most turbulent and challenging yet. As if it wasn\u2019t bad enough their label went bust and collapsed their management under the financial strain before their 2013 EP \u2018Hard Truths\u2019<\/em>, frontman Alex Green suffered ill health and a resulting heart attack at the devastating age of 27. Consequently, self-released \u2018Year Of The Jackal\u2019<\/em> has been a labour of unconditional love and testament to the paramount importance of their music to a quartet of young guys with successful lives ahead of them.<\/p>\n

Bursting with harmonious energy, confident opener \u2018Crooked Teeth\u2019<\/em> exposes deception with a contagious hook and captivating wails. \u201cIs it really worth the lies you\u2019re telling to yourself?\u201d<\/em> cries the confrontational \u2018Coins\u2019<\/em>, punching its aggression through every lashing second. Graphic and contemplative, \u2018Hangnail\u2019<\/em> remarks, \u201clike a hangnail torn from me, if you tear it, it will only bleed, but if you leave it, it will only break free\u201d<\/em>, a prime example of their lyrical genius, while the reactionary and relatable \u2018You\u2019ll Never Learn\u2019<\/em> contrasts seductive whispers with a beautifully contemplative riff.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan you see the hurt that we\u2019re hiding so well?\u201d<\/em> asks frontman Alex Green through \u2018Hangnail\u2019<\/em>, driven by reflective guitars and an unrivalled emotive passion as the band\u2019s reality proves the ideal muse, while the solemn opening of \u2018Tell Me\u2019<\/em> draws a rock-pop hybrid anthem of being pushed to the brink by the pressure. Evidently scarred by their experiences of late, Attention Thieves<\/strong> have no intention of yielding.<\/p>\n

While the captivating instrumental \u2018Sleepyear\u2019<\/em> proves Attention Thieves<\/strong>\u2019 versatility, phenomenal drums and heartfelt screams herald \u2018If You\u2019re Not With Us\u2019<\/em>. \u201cThey\u2019ve got you on your knees,\u201d<\/em> warns the cautionary tale \u2018Culture Of Fear\u2019<\/em>, projecting venomous cries of a lesson learned from bitter experience. \u201cThere\u2019s nowhere to go, nowhere to hide\u201d<\/em> spits \u2018The Jackal\u2019<\/em>, combining the towering strength of Alex\u2019s cries with voluminous gang vocals. A poignant voicebox for an internal struggle, album closer \u2018Actors Cast As Heroes\u2019<\/em> depicts a bid to escape from your own mind which, however successful it may be, cannot go unheard.<\/p>\n

Every second of \u2018Year Of The Jackal\u2019<\/em> encapsulates the band\u2019s battles against the odds with a tenacity and energy rarely seen nowadays. Determined in their aims to bring this turbulent episode of their career to a satisfactory close, Attention Thieves<\/strong> have exhibited their mastery in their strongest studio outing yet.<\/p>\n
