{"id":10076,"date":"2015-05-18T12:38:03","date_gmt":"2015-05-18T12:38:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/album-review-diamond-youth-nothing-matters\/"},"modified":"2018-03-21T22:16:13","modified_gmt":"2018-03-21T22:16:13","slug":"album-review-diamond-youth-nothing-matters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/album-review-diamond-youth-nothing-matters\/","title":{"rendered":"Album Review: Diamond Youth &#8211; Nothing\u00a0Matters"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/9dab4c1cbba04f06bca404e5337ed725\/tumblr_inline_noi2l81kpz1qztcot_540.jpg\" width=\"250px\" alt=\"\" title=\"\">While members of <b>Diamond Youth<\/b> may have a pedigree of hardcore brutality, including the likes of Terror and Trapped Under Ice, anyone expecting the same from the Baltimore mob will be in for a bit of a shock. <\/figure>\n<p>Instead, <i>\u2018Nothing Matters\u2019<\/i> picks up from 2013\u2019s <i>\u2018Orange\u2019<\/i> and 2014\u2019s <i>\u2018Shake\u2019<\/i> to offer up a mature take on alt-rock that is at times robust, at others beguiling, but never anything short of entertaining. <\/p>\n<p> <i>\u2018Nothing Matters\u2019<\/i> is also brilliantly succinct. Only one single song breaks the 4 minute barrier (and even then it\u2019s 4 minutes on the dot) meaning there\u2019s clearly an intention to make <i>\u2018Nothing Matters\u2019<\/i> as sharp and as direct as possible. No doubt that\u2019s the group\u2019s hardcore background resulting in some tight editing but it translates beautifully to the likes of <i>\u2018Riptide\u2019<\/i>, which could have been a morose and meandering dirge if delivered by less confident hands.<!-- more --><\/p>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<p>However, for all brooding mid-paced numbers, it\u2019s not where <i>\u2018Nothing Matters\u2019<\/i> excels. Instead, it\u2019s the punked up songs which really stand out. <i>\u2018Thought I Had It Right\u2019<\/i> has a rumbling bassline that owes a debt of gratitude to the Pixies but is a killer highlight filled with fuzzy vocals and a monstrous chorus, while <i>\u2018In The Clouds\u2019<\/i> is a rollicking stomp of epic proportions. <\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, opener <i>\u2018Nothing Matters\u2019<\/i> has a breezy Beach Boys pop vibe \u2013 something of a trait on a record which is strong on hooks and melodies, even if they remain buried under distortion \u2013 while <i>\u2018The Nothing\u2019<\/i> is a dark, new wave anthem that owes as much to the likes of Queens of the Stone Age than it does your typical Topshelf fare. <\/p>\n<p>If anything, the biggest drawback of <i>\u2018Nothing Matters\u2019<\/i> is that its reference points are all a little too prominent. It\u2019s easy to spot the influence of the likes of Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, the Pixies and the Beach Boys and it would be nice to see a bit more originality from what are clearly very talented musicians and more than competent songwriters. <\/p>\n<p>Naturally, that doesn\u2019t mean <i>\u2018Nothing Matters\u2019<\/i> is a bad album \u2013 in fact, far from it \u2013 there\u2019s not a duff song on it, and the group\u2019s ability to deliver 11 songs in a blistering 32 minutes means it\u2019s an album you can put on repeat and lose an afternoon to very easily.
