\"\"The Faith No More<\/b> reunion of 2009 came ‘From Out Of Nowhere’<\/i> (#sorrynotsorry) and, whilst being met with utter rapture by their fans, was widely expected to be a last hurrah before the band finally imploded for good. Yet here we are, six years later and we\u2019re talking about brand new Faith No More<\/b> songs. \u2018Sol Invictus\u2019<\/i> drops 18 years since the sarcastically titled \u2018Album Of The Year\u2019<\/i> and is brought to us by the same line-up that produced and toured that record. Is it any cop though? <\/figure>\n

In a word yes! There\u2019s been a hint of what to expect already with the mind bending \u2018Motherfucker\u2019<\/i> and the rip-roaring stomp of \u2018Superhero\u2019<\/i> and both tracks fit seamlessly into an album situation despite their familiarity. Opening with the title track \u2018Sol Invictus\u2019<\/i> eases in with a sound that follows on directly from \u2018Album Of The Year\u2019<\/i>. It\u2019s a soulful introduction underpinned by stilted guitar work from Jon Hudson and the contemplative piano of Roddy Bottum.<\/p>\n

<\/figure>\n

Once \u2018Superhero\u2019<\/i> blusters through, the album opens up and gives itself some air. \u2018Sunny Side Up\u2019<\/i> is a mess of funk guitar with a blistering chorus reminiscent of \u2018Just A Man\u2019<\/i> from 1995\u2019s \u2018King For A Day\u2026Fool For A Lifetime\u2019<\/i>. It\u2019s classic Faith No More<\/b> and any doubts that even the greatest of cynics may have had about the bands ability to cut it after so long are extinguished inside the first three songs. <\/p>\n

I could bang on all day about the rest of the songs on the album but there\u2019s really no need. They sound like Faith No More<\/b> and they\u2019re great. From the operatic pomp of \u2018Matador\u2019<\/i> to the sneering tension of \u2018Cone Of Shame\u2019<\/i> the entire album is a resounding success. They idea of listing reference points is equally as redundant. Faith No More<\/b> didn\u2019t sound like anyone else when they entered the public conscious in the late 80\u2019s and they still don\u2019t like anyone else. <\/p>\n

So many bands have reformed to try and re-capture former glories in recent years, and whilst there\u2019ll always be a market for reunion tours very few have lived up to the hype on record. Faith No More<\/b> aren\u2019t just any old band though. Cited as innovators and an influence on just about every form of alternative rock that\u2019s surfaced since 1990, they were unlikely to fall short here. In fact you doubt they\u2019d even have bothered unless they were enjoying it \u2013 let\u2019s face it that\u2019s why they called it quits in the first place. \u2018Sol Invictus\u2019<\/i> is the sound of a band enjoying each other\u2019s creative company again and that\u2019s allowed them to slip into a groove that\u2019s welcomingly familiar and as stirringly brilliant as ever. <\/p>\n
