Having recently completed a UK headline tour, Canadian sibling duo\u00a0Softcult<\/strong> have shared another track from their upcoming debut album,\u00a0‘When A Flower Doesn\u2019t Grow’<\/a><\/em>. The song is called\u00a0‘Queen Of Nothing’<\/em> and demonstrates the pair’s atmospheric side.<\/p>\n

The use of blissful guitars and cushioned drums gives\u00a0‘Queen Of Nothing’<\/em> a breezy tone, with Softcult’<\/strong>s grunge-tinged alt-rock shimmers underneath.<\/p>\n

\u2018When A Flower Doesn\u2019t Grow\u2019<\/em> was written during a period of personal upheaval, with the latest single confronting the theme of female discrimination and the trauma it causes\u00a0\u201cThis song is about the double standards, harsh judgments, and unrealistic expectations that patriarchal society places on women. We\u2019re expected to be sexy, but only as it applies to the male fantasy; somehow a virgin and a slut,”<\/em> explains Softcult<\/strong> vocalist Mercedes Arn-Horn.<\/p>\n

“We\u2019re expected to constantly nurture the men in our lives, and shamed if our aspirations exceed becoming wives and mothers. The world demands maturity from us, but discards us when we\u2019re old and \u201cunfuckable\u201d, our value reduced to our ability to attract men. And when we attract men, we\u2019re labeled \u201cwhores\u201d. We\u2019re expected to be \u201ccool\u201d and \u201clike one of the guys\u201d, but not too abrasive, loud, or \u201cunladylike.\u201d Our intelligence and our success is tolerated so long as it isn\u2019t too threatening or intimidating to our male counterparts. From unconscious biases to blatant sexism, misogyny and gender violence, women face an impossible amount of discrimination in the world today. And no matter the amount of vitriol or ignorance we endure, we\u2019re still expected to smile. This song is about the realisation that these cycles of abuse are bigger than our personal experiences. It\u2019s recognising the systemic nature of mistreatment and discrimination.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n
