Melbourne\u2019s heaviest export, Deez Nuts<\/strong> have proved their worth under the umbrella of contagious, confrontational and uncontrollable rapcore. However, their fourth studio outing proves that, somewhat surprisingly, the novelty\u2019s worn off. \u2018Word Is Bond\u2019<\/em> drags their trademark catastrophic riffs and racing vocals back down to earth kicking and screaming, addressing emotional states they\u2019ve previously ducked \u2013 you can\u2019t dodge real life for long.<\/p>\n

<\/figure>\n

Hanging on the precipice of rage and vengeance, \u2018The Message\u2019<\/em> carries a growling, driven ethos of solidarity, while the confident and decidedly brutal \u2018Behind Bars\u2019<\/em> swears like a trooper to a drudging riff. The intense fretwork of \u2018Face This On My Own\u2019<\/em> frames towering anthemic gang vocals, detailing strength in numbers and a defiance rarely seen in hardcore. The self-assured confidence doesn\u2019t last long, however, as \u2018Wrong Things Right\u2019<\/em> soon states \u201call I can\u2019t be is a good man like my father and his father before him.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

The commanding drums of \u2018Pour Up\u2019<\/em> and gritty leading line of \u2018What\u2019s Good\u2019<\/em> showcase musicianship at its finest, holding their own at every opportunity. Alex Salinger\u2019s remorseless drum work throughout \u2018Yesterday\u2019<\/em> complements intimidating chants and a rap-infused interlude, while Matt Rogers\u2019 brief yet punchy solo through \u2018What\u2019s Good\u2019<\/em> furthers a contagious energy that tirelessly spans the record.<\/p>\n

\u201cEverything you did, you did for yourself and nobody else, no matter the cost,\u201d<\/em> chants \u2018What I Gotta Do\u2019<\/em>, a track which is as driven and empowering as they come. Nobody is safe from JJ Peters, as he spits venom at lightning speed from beginning to end. Even targeting the man in the mirror on \u2018Chess Boxin\u2019<\/em>, which delivers their signature relentless vengeance with unrivalled conviction. \u201cOh ye of little faith,\u201d<\/em> Peters levels at their critics throughout \u2018What\u2019s Good\u2019<\/em>. Their intricate fusion of conflicting genre interests is no mean feat, yet Deez Nuts<\/strong> continue to compel and reinvent.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, too many tracks close unexpectedly and run far too short, with \u2018Understand\u2019<\/em> coming in at a tragically brief 50 seconds. While the entire album run’s for a mere 35 minutes in total, with few tracks surviving past the two minute mark. Closer and title track, \u2018Word Is Bond\u2019<\/em>, finally provides the record’s closing statement \u2013 \u201ctalk is cheap but we\u2019re rich because our word is bond.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Albeit rushed at times, \u2018Word Is Bond\u2019<\/em> carries its messages loud and clear. Whatever you\u2019ve been through, you\u2019re standing shoulder to shoulder with others just like you. And for those that cross their path – providing you live to tell the tale, learn from your mistakes. Deez Nuts<\/strong> are not to be messed with.<\/p>\n
