Providing an outlet for frustrations at the state of the modern mentality, Sheffield\u2019s finest While She Sleeps<\/strong> have proved their worth as the heirs of the metal throne once and for all.<\/figure>\n

In the shadow of their show-stopping appearance on the main stage at Download last year, and just in time for their co-headlining European tour with Cancer Bats, Sleeps<\/strong>\u2019 third studio offering smashes every high standard \u2018This Is The Six\u2019<\/em> produced. This time around, screeching electrics conjure a beautiful chaos with rousing gang vocals and destroying rhythms \u2013 the bar just got a hell of a lot higher.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

The record opens to a cacophony of crowd noise, but only one voice holds the floor \u2013 Loz Taylor. \u201cThis is a system declining on us,\u201d<\/em> Loz screams through the rousing \u2018New World Torture\u2019<\/em>. Through their trademark jaw-dropping solos and contagious scream-alongs, a voice of damnation cries its lungs out.<\/p>\n

The disdainful disorder of \u2018Brainwashed\u2019<\/i> complements the reflective perfection of \u2018Our Legacy\u2019<\/em>, speaking from bitter experience and core defiance. Captivating riffs and enrapturing battle cries herald a stark reminder of their flawless harmony, while \u2018Four Walls\u2019<\/em> demonstrates their versatility to morph into a contemplative chant.<\/p>\n

A veritable spectrum of tempos and emotions, \u2018Torment\u2019<\/em>\u2019s thrashing riffs and infectious chorus soon pave the way for deadly whispers and a storming breakdown. Cries of \u201cstill I\u2019m no better off than I was\u201d<\/em> will no doubt be ringing through venues across Europe next month. Metalcore\u2019s now-compulsory piano interlude \u2018Kangaezu Ni\u2019<\/em> transitions smoothly into the haunting opening notes of record highlight \u2018Life In Tension\u2019<\/em>, where rapturous congratulations are owed to Sean Long for his mastery of such a defiant riff that tells its own story.<\/p>\n

Shapeshifting into the characteristically brutal \u2018Trophies Of Violence\u2019<\/em>, Sleeps<\/strong> have by no means forgotten their roots in punchy vengeance anthems. With leading lines echoing iconic Metallica and inspiring gang vocals forged by their own design, \u2018No Sides No Enemies\u2019<\/em>, on the other hand, condemns through solidarity rather than violence. Closing on the reflective chant of \u2018Modern Minds\u2019<\/em> and a sneakily hidden and distinctly raw acoustic, the multi-tonal \u2018Brainwashed\u2019<\/em> signals the end of the band\u2019s agonising silence with an unmistakeable roar.<\/p>\n

Embracing melody alongside chaos would be a challenge to anyone else, but While She Sleeps<\/strong> take the challenge in their stride. The only uncertainty is how \u2018Brainwashed\u2019<\/em> could ever be topped.<\/p>\n
