\"\"Having survived a tornado which left their van and gear a write-off, it\u2019s perhaps fitting that the second release by Tennessee\u2019s Pillow Talk<\/b> is a swirling, tempestuous and intense listen.<\/p>\n

Reminiscent of the likes of Whirr or Balance and Composure at their quieter moments \u2018What We Should Have Said\u2019<\/em> is as atmospheric and powerful as you\u2019d expect, with plenty of nods to post-punk, post-rock and grunge to make for an interesting, if not a thrillingly exciting, listen. <\/p>\n

Opener \u2018Bend\u2019<\/i> is a gorgeous instrumental which builds before opening into \u2018Make You Real\u2019<\/em> and it\u2019s here that the problems start. After building the intensity, \u2018Make You Real\u2019<\/em> isn\u2019t really punchy enough to follow such a strong opener. It\u2019s not a bad song, it\u2019s just that after such promise it\u2019s a bit of a let-down.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

However, the melodious \u2018Room\u2019<\/em> gets things back on track. The outstanding cut of the five songs on offer, it perhaps lacks the intensity of the other tracks, but compensates perfectly with a strong hook and an easy accessibility not found on the rest of the EP. In fact, it could quite easily sit alongside anything on Balance and Composure\u2019s \u2018The Things We Think We\u2019re Missing\u2019<\/i> and not sound out of place.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, \u2018Escape Me\u2019<\/em> sees the group stretch their sound out to a challenging 6 minutes. It\u2019s powerful stuff but also something of a trial, while \u2018Heaven Sent\u2019<\/em> is considerably more direct, and serves to highlight the potential of Pillow Talk<\/strong> when they throw everything into the mix from the off.<\/p>\n

Overall, it means \u2018What We Should Have Said\u2019<\/em> is something of a mixed bag. There\u2019s certainly a good band in there fighting to get out, but by focusing on the intensity and atmospherics it\u2019s often to the detriment of the songs themselves.<\/p>\n
