Drawing a sold-out crowd in from the Camden downpour, the KOKO opened its doors to Decade<\/strong>, Landscapes<\/strong> and The Used<\/strong> for a night to remember. Albeit an unusual setting for a rock show, its blood-red walls and decadent balconies were to witness the three stages of revolution \u2013 nonchalance, rage and, ultimately, action.<\/p>\n

Decade<\/strong> emerge first, embracing the somewhat nonchalant crowd with cheeky grins and quippy stage banter to wring some energy from the sodden audience. Opener \u2018Brainfreeze\u2019<\/em> showcases their persistent vitality since their formation 6 years ago, while \u2018British Weather\u2019<\/em> brought a relevant reflection on the evening to raise more heads than it seems the band expected. The eye-opening optimism and smiles from frontman Alex Sears despite introducing the track \u2018I Don\u2019t Care\u2019<\/em> \u201dbecause I don\u2019t fucking care\u201d<\/em> shows they couldn\u2019t be more ecstatic to be opening the show to a packed venue. With electric anger and ruining riffs, Landscapes<\/strong> were an unexpected support but brought a breathtakingly welcome shift toward melodic hardcore – at least for me anyway. It\u2019s a shame the appreciation in the room was lacking, as the majority of the audience weren\u2019t expecting such a heavy support. However, the static crowd left vocalist Shaun Milton unphased, screaming \u2018D.R.E.A.M\u2019<\/em> with as much fervour as on record. Playing all but two tracks from 2013\u2019s \u2018Life Gone Wrong\u2019<\/em>, Landscapes<\/strong> hopefully broadened many minds for good. (3.5\/5)<\/p>\n

The Used<\/strong> rarely reach UK shores, and even scarcer for headline tours such as this. As deduced by a show of hands conducted by frontman Bert McCracken, an overwhelming number of attendees had never seen The Used<\/strong> before, which would explain the sold-out venue. From shaming a fan into recording the crowd from the stage to ensuring everyone had \u201da lot of juice\u201d<\/em>, the band\u2019s crowd connection was electric as ever. Despite the absence of lead guitarist Quinn Allman, replaced by Saosin\u2019s Justin Shekoski, each song plays true to track, with a set list comprising the hits \u2018Taste Of Ink\u2019<\/em> and \u2018All That I\u2019ve Got\u2019<\/em> leaving nobody disappointed. <\/p>\n

The surprise, however, lay in the rarely-outed \u2019Artwork\u2019<\/em> tracks \u2018Best Of Me\u2019<\/em> and \u2018Blood On My Hands\u2019<\/em>, owed to the advantage of a headline tour\u2019s set length. \u2018Revolution\u2019<\/em>, as always, comes accompanied with a rousing speech from Bert reminding that \u201dwhat they told you growing up was a lie\u201d<\/em>. Their ceaselessly energetic performance surges through every layer of the venue to culminate in a 2-song encore featuring a balcony rendition of \u2018On My Own\u2019<\/em>, demonstrating their indomitable ability to drastically alter an atmosphere in a heartbeat. Closing on a mashup of \u2018Box Full Of Sharp Objects\u2019<\/em> with Nirvana\u2019s \u2018Smells Like Teen Spirit\u2019<\/em>, there was no doubt the crowd left with hearts full and minds dangerously open.
