From his work with The Arrogant Sons of Bitches and Bomb The Music Industry! to his more recent solo output and collaborations with Fake Problems\u2019 Chris Farren (under the name Antarctigo Vespucci), <strong>Rosenstock\u2019s<\/strong> varied career has always remained fiercely inclusive and DIY-focused. And all of it is in evidence on the sprawling, idiosyncratic and charming <em>\u2018We Cool?\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The result is an album which has the focus of a social butterfly but ultimately wins you over through sheer likeability. It also proves, on the whole, that <strong>Rosenstock<\/strong> can turn his hand to a wide variety of genres with great success. <\/p>\n<p><em>\u2018You in Weird Cities\u2019<\/em> is, for the most part, a frantic, neurotic, punk\u2019n\u2019roll blast while <em>\u2018Nausea\u2019<\/em> is a twisted piano ballad in the vain of Ben Folds or Jukebox The Ghost. That it\u2019s one of <em> \u2018We Cool?\u2019s <\/em> outstanding moments perhaps shows just what an enigma <strong>Rosenstock<\/strong> is. Elsewhere, the alt-pop <em>\u2018Hall of Fame\u2019<\/em> is a down the line, foot-tapping triumph, while the bar-room blues of <i>\u2018Beers Again Alone\u2019<\/i> is the sort of rabble-rousing call to arms that is sure to be a blast live. <!-- more --><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>But, just when you think you know what <b>Rosenstock\u2019s<\/b> about, he throws you a curveball. <em>\u2018I\u2019m Serious, I\u2019m Sorry\u2019<\/em> is a personal lament that sounds like a scattergun thought process set to music. Initially, I thought it seemed somewhat out of place, but when you consider just how different it is compared to the glorious <em>\u2018Polar Bear or Africa\u2019<\/em> or jaunty <em>\u2018Darkness Records\u2019<\/em> it shows just how talented <b>Rosentstock<\/b> is as a songwriter. <\/p>\n<p>Overall, <strong>Rosenstock<\/strong> has delivered a record that is fun to listen to, brilliantly written and musically eclectic. Perhaps even more significantly, it\u2019s also an album that pays homage to his many musical personalities but never feels forced or contrived.
