Birmingham\u2019s Oceans Ate Alaska<\/strong> have worked their metalcore socks off since forming in 2011, signing with Fearless Records<\/strong> a mere 3 years later. If that\u2019s no suitable testament to their talent, touring with the likes of The Color Morale, The Word Alive and Veil Of Maya certainly is. Taking ownership of the faint concept of a ship lost at sea, \u2018Lost Isles\u2019<\/em> sails into almost every subgenre\u2019s harbour, but the question is – which one should their vessel call home?<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Opening with a thumping riff, \u2018Fourthirtytwo\u2019<\/em> establishes an atmosphere of heavy as fuck techy layers, before the \u2018Blood Brothers\u2019<\/em> wade in with their screeching-growling dialogue. By absorbing influences from Architects and Bring Me The Horizon, \u2018High Horse\u2019<\/em> delivers skull-crushing fretwork to contribute to the fast-paced venomous rage of Harrison\u2019s piercing screams. \u201cOpportunity is your only ally\u201d<\/em>, exclaims the headstrong \u2018Downsides\u2019<\/em>, perfected with clean choruses and a strong cellular guttural energy the scene has lost sight of in recent years. The call to arms of \u2018Entity\u2019<\/em> heralded by jaw-dropping drumwork encapsulates the band\u2019s ethos of emotional determination, breaking hearts with the cry \u201cyou\u2019ll always have a place in my heart even after death pulls us apart\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Technical, chaotic and devilish, \u2018Part Of Something\u2019<\/em> conveys electric rage in stark comparison with the combination of soft emotive and aggressive vocals of its successor \u2018Over The Edge\u2019<\/em>. Moods change rapidly and unexpectedly, but the smooth flow of the record is testament to their spectrum of talent. Spitting venom through the clean choruses of \u2018Downsides\u2019<\/em> and raising the roof with album-stealer \u2018Floorboards\u2019<\/em>\u2019 contagious crowd chants and sing-alongs, every second is loaded with atmosphere and energy. Melodic cleans set a striking contrast with guttural growls amidst the \u2018Vultures and Sharks\u2019<\/em>, while the record closes on the reflective refrains of \u2018Lost Isles\u2019<\/em> and \u2018Mirage\u2019<\/em>, dropping the curtain on a desperate, heartfelt plea where \u2018Lost Isles\u2019<\/em> comes full circle.<\/p>\n

Oceans Ate Alaska<\/strong> have set sail toward pretty much every trend we\u2019ve seen in the last decade and somehow master every single one. Both melodic and chaotic in equal measure, they came to conquer and have wholeheartedly succeeded.<\/p>\n
