{"id":12432,"date":"2015-01-13T13:53:41","date_gmt":"2015-01-13T13:53:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/album-review-pears-go-to-prison\/"},"modified":"2018-03-21T22:16:19","modified_gmt":"2018-03-21T22:16:19","slug":"album-review-pears-go-to-prison","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/album-review-pears-go-to-prison\/","title":{"rendered":"Album Review: Pears &#8211; Go To Prison"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/3137fab28fcb2ea709c17965705fa1e6\/tumblr_inline_ni2yyfpDmg1qztcot.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\">If  you\u2019re still struggling with a New Year\u2019s hangover, and the thought of a long and cold and depressing January has put you in a bit of a stupor, then <strong>Pears<\/strong>could be the band to stir you from your malaise. <\/p>\n<p>Part Kid Dynamite, part NOFX, they combine the fuck-you hardcore of the former with the knowing sense of humour and punk melody of the latter. The swings between the two are often jarring \u2013 and often come with little warning \u2013 but ensure <strong>Pears<\/strong> remain interesting, if a somewhat challenging listen.<\/p>\n<p>Opener <em>\u2018You\u2019re Boring\u2019<\/em> is a prime example. Sounding like each member is playing a different song and racing to finish first, it\u2019s a noisy mess, punctuated with growls of <em>\u2018You\u2019re Boring!\u2019<\/em> It\u2019s confusing and silly and annoying \u2013 but also hugely memorable. At the other end of the spectrum \u2013 and as if to emphasise the point \u2013 closing track <em> \u2018Grimespree\u2019<\/em> veers from straight-up hardcore punk to a doomy, hugely unsettling and freakish effort, complete with barely audible whispers that wouldn\u2019t be out of place in a psychological chiller. Minimal and dragged out to the point of tedium, especially during its latter half, it\u2019s at odds with the rest of the album \u2013 but again is instantly memorable (if only for being so utterly terrifying). <!-- more --><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>To confuse matters, a cover of <em> \u2018Judy Is A Punk\u2019<\/em> is played with the straightest of straight bats midway through the album. Unexpected and delightful (it could have just as easily been a car-crash) it\u2019s an enjoyable diversion from the spluttering chaos elsewhere. Elsewhere, <em>\u2018Victim To Be\u2019<\/em> has a great melodic chorus to go alongside its hardcore punk verses, while <em>\u2018Sycophant\u2019<\/em> is a manic sub-two minute punk blast in which the lyrics fly by so fast they\u2019re utterly incoherent. <\/p>\n<p>All of this means it\u2019s difficult to get a handle on what <strong>PEARS<\/strong> are really about. <em>\u2018Go To Prison\u2019<\/em> is a riot, with cuts such as <em>\u2018Little Bags\u2019<\/em> showing that when they pull the disparate parts together they\u2019re onto something special, but it\u2019s also wildly inconsistent. <\/p>\n<p>On record it means <strong>Pears<\/strong> are little more than a curio.
