{"id":1424,"date":"2017-08-17T12:36:29","date_gmt":"2017-08-17T12:36:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/review-neck-deep-the-peace-and-the-panic\/"},"modified":"2023-01-17T16:43:00","modified_gmt":"2023-01-17T16:43:00","slug":"review-neck-deep-the-peace-and-the-panic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/review-neck-deep-the-peace-and-the-panic\/","title":{"rendered":"Review:\u00a0Neck Deep &#8211; The Peace And The Panic"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"tmblr-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/71dcc27ed1443f37184a6310be9e2c94\/tumblr_oczgq9lfGb1r8no6so9_r24_1280.jpg\" width=\"250em\" alt=\"\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n<p>For some, the rapid trajectory of <a href=\"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/tag\/neck-deep\/\"><b>Neck Deep<\/b><\/a> has been incredible. 2015\u2019s impressive <a href=\"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/album-review-neck-deep-lifes-not-out-to-get\/\"><i>\u2018Life\u2019s Not Out To Get You\u2019<\/i><\/a> surprised many, it allowed them to shake off niggling comparisons and put the Welsh group in the upper echelons of the pop-punk pyramid. Yet despite their success, the intervening years haven\u2019t been kind to the band. <i>\u2018The Peace And The Panic\u2019<\/i> sees them come back to reality with a set of lyrically abrupt songs. At its core is the theme of lost; immediate family and friends have departed in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout vocalist Ben Barlow questions his own mortality (see <i>\u2018The Grand Delusion\u2019<\/i> and <i>&#8216;Where Do We Go When We Go\u2019<\/i>) with a heavy dosage of reality. For example, <i>&#8216;Parachute\u2019<\/i> sees Barlow wanting to be disconnected from <i>\u201csmall town politics\u201d<\/i> and escaping everyday life. Whereas <i>&#8216;In Bloom\u2019<\/i> revolves around coping with loss and trying to move on.<\/p>\n<p><!-- more --><\/p>\n<p><i>&#8216;TPATP\u2019<\/i> is a lyrically multi-faceted record, with <i>&#8216;Happy Judgement Day\u2019<\/i> and <i>&#8216;Don\u2019t Wait\u2019<\/i> seeing the quintet getting political; nods to fake news, building walls, and lying governments. The latter is a rallying call to think for yourself with Architects\u2019 Sam Carter simply adding to the angst.<\/p>\n<p>In comparison to <i>&#8216;LNOTGY\u2019<\/i>, there\u2019s little in the way of stylistic progression. Although, they\u2019ve not lost their ability to produce pop-punk-infused earworms. Beyond their lyrical context, <i>&#8216;In Bloom\u2019<\/i>, <i>&#8216;Parachute\u2019<\/i> and <i>&#8216;Where Do We Go\u2026\u2019<\/i> are, on the surface, playful and infectious. However, songs such as <i>&#8216;Critical Mistake\u2019<\/i> and <i>&#8216;Heavy Lies\u2019<\/i> come off as safe.<\/p>\n<p>The rose-tinted <i>&#8217;19 Seventy Something\u2019<\/i> shouldn\u2019t be ignored. A bittersweet tribute to Barlow\u2019s departed father, it tells the story of his parent\u2019s relationship before Ben sends a mournful message to his mother; <i>\u201cI will hold you when you cry, as that is what he would have done\u201d<\/i>. It\u2019s a poignant highlight.<\/p>\n<p><i>\u2018The Peace And The Panic\u2019<\/i> is an admirable step forward for <b>Neck Deep<\/b>.
