From the beguiling Weakerthans to the Americana of The Details, the rustic <strong>Rural Alberta Advantage<\/strong> and the bluesy Constantines, the stark natural beauty has helped shape and influence some fabulous and heartfelt music. With <em>\u2018The Forgotten And The Brave\u2019<\/em>, <strong>Owls By Nature<\/strong> have delivered an enjoyable, if slightly prosaic, take on rootsy folk-rock that, while not in the same bracket as the aforementioned acts, warrants repeated listens. <\/p>\n<p>Hailing from Edmonton, the rootsy five-piece are at their best when they throw down some rousing, foot-stomping folk-rock, and <em> \u2018The forgotten And The Brave\u2019<\/em> starts off like a freight-train thundering across the rolling tundra. Opening salvo of <em> \u2018Brothers\u2019<\/em> and <em> \u2018Little Birds\u2019<\/em> are prime examples of this classic, no-frills approach. Recalling The Gaslight Anthem circa <em> \u2018American Slang\u2019<\/em>, they\u2019re authentic slices of rock\u2019n\u2019roll that charge along, backed up by a couple of great choruses, some nifty keyboard lines line and intense drumming. <em> \u2018Dancing Girl\u2019<\/em> is another fine cut. Perhaps owing more to classic rock (indeed, the story in the song is as old as <strong>Kiss\u2019<\/strong> make-up), it\u2019s nevertheless a brilliant, fist-in-the-air rock song. <!-- more --><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>However, this timelessness is also <em> \u2018The Forgotten And The Brave<\/em>\u2019s biggest drawback. Lyrically, there\u2019s simply too many clich\u00e9s running throughout and the song structures are just too simplistic \u2013 especially compared to the bands listed in the introduction. <em> \u2018Darkness\u2019<\/em> is monumentally repetitive about \u2018fearing the darkness\u2019, while even <em> \u2018Dancing Girl\u2019<\/em>, delivers the brilliant\/stupid <em> \u201cShe take me out, shows me On-tar-rio. This is her town. This is Tor-ron-to\u201d <\/em>. I love it \u2013 but I\u2019m embarrassed to even admit it.<\/p>\n<p>They also run out of steam towards the ends of the record. <em> \u2018Would\u2019<\/em> and <em> \u2018Wrigley Field\u2019<\/em> are both lovely songs, but a little too beige to leave a lasting impression, while <em> \u2018Honesty\u2019<\/em> \u2013 which is the big rousing number is just a little too trite. <\/p>\n<p>Overall, the unashamed rock songs ensure <em> \u2018The Forgotten And The Brave\u2019<\/em> is an enjoyable listen, provided you don\u2019t pay too much attention to the lyrics.
