\"\"Triple Crown<\/strong><\/span><\/strong>\u2019s roster is probably the strongest it has been for a number of years and \u2018Absent Sounds\u2019<\/em>, by Californian rockers From Indian Lakes<\/strong>, proves there\u2019s plenty of depth and variety to the bands they\u2019re working with.<\/span><\/p>\n

Probably the first thing that strikes you about From Indian Lakes<\/strong> is Joey Vannucchi\u2019s frankly ridiculous voice. It\u2019s the sound of a bona fide pop star and has such incredible range and texture that it is the clear focal point on a sprawling and beautifully-constructed record. It\u2019s the sort of voice where you find yourself hanging onto every word or lyric, often to the detriment of the music.<\/p>\n

Fortunately, from a musical point of view, \u2018Absent Sounds\u2019<\/em> is also sufficiently interesting and challenging, so it never feels like a vehicle for Vannucchi\u2019s voice. Instead, you have a record which has clear appeal but which isn\u2019t going to give you everything on a plate and will make you invest to get the most out of what it has to offer.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

In fact, From Indian Lakes<\/strong>, remind me of Azure Ray, with a concerted effort to make arrangements interesting while Vannucchi\u2019s vocals try to steal your heart. For example, the opening track \u2018Come In This Light\u2019<\/em> could happily live on \u2018Hold On Love\u2019<\/em>, and you could just imagine the arrangement swirling around Orenda Fink or Maria Taylors vocals just as it does Vannucchi\u2019s.<\/p>\n

Due to the nature of the record, there are a few other similarly low-key songs, and while they all remain swooningly brilliant and mesmerising (\u2018Runner\u2019<\/em>, \u2018Awful Things\u2019<\/em> and \u2018Search For More\u2019<\/em> in particular), they don\u2019t quite match the opener\u2019s intensity.<\/p>\n

But what From Indian Lakes<\/strong> do very well is switch things up rather nicely. \u2018Fog\u2019<\/em> sees them inject a little bit of pace to proceedings while \u2018Sleeping Limbs\u2019<\/em> and \u2018Label This Love\u2019<\/em> have an off-kilter post-rock vibe. In these moments they recall My Morning Jacket, and fans of Jim James\u2019 rockers will certainly find an appeal in From Indian Lakes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

If there\u2019s one criticism, it\u2019s that it feels a bit too robotic in places. It\u2019s just too well-constructed and played and I\u2019d like to see it a bit rawer. That said, ‘Absent Sounds\u2019<\/em> still retains all of the beauty of a work of art, even if it never quite has the feel of it.<\/p>\n
