He certainly thrives when the focus is all on him, and retains that knockabout likability that made Stagecoach so much fun. But <em>\u2018Humblebrag\u2019<\/em> also shows up the weaknesses in his songwriting and vocals.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2018Leader Boards\u2019<\/em> is possibly the example of this odd dichotomy. For the most part, it\u2019s a gloriously arranged alt-country cut that shows Barham at his best, yet is let down by some cringeworthy lyrics (<em>\u201cWe were the underdogs and you were overdogs\u201d <\/em> just one of a multitude of sins). It\u2019s the sort of throwaway line you could get away with as part of a super fun indie-pop band, but when it\u2019s the central focus, for me, it doesn\u2019t really work.<!-- more --><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>However, it\u2019s not all doom and gloom, as there are enough moments on <em>\u2018Humbelbrag\u2019<\/em> to indicate that Barham could develop into a singer-songwriter of note, and his arrangements throughout are consistently excellent.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2018Happy Too\u2019<\/em>, is breezy and instantly likeable, yet contains a depth not previously associated with Barham (even if it cites The Human Centipede), while the raw <em>\u2018Still A Country Song\u2019<\/em> charts the demise of Stagecoach and captures the bittersweet feeling of letting something you\u2019re immensely proud of end.<\/p>\n<p>In truth, though, this is perhaps the major problem with <em>\u2018Humblebrag\u2019<\/em>. A Stagecoach-shaped shadow looms large throughout, and while Barham has done much to distance himself from that style and sound, it still feels more apron strings need to be cut before <strong>Uncle Luc<\/strong> will be a fully-realised free standing project. Barham\u2019s sincerity and honesty \u2013 as well as his irreverence \u2013 ensure <em>\u2018Humblebrag\u2019<\/em> is a promising and interesting debut \u2013 but more refinement is needed if Barham is to establish himself as singer-songwriter.
