{"id":18690,"date":"2014-09-16T10:16:58","date_gmt":"2014-09-16T10:16:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/album-review-twothirtytwo-the-hope-we-had-ep\/"},"modified":"2018-03-21T22:16:24","modified_gmt":"2018-03-21T22:16:24","slug":"album-review-twothirtytwo-the-hope-we-had-ep","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/album-review-twothirtytwo-the-hope-we-had-ep\/","title":{"rendered":"Album Review: twothirtytwo &#8211; The Hope We Had EP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/tumblr_inline_nbw7xbaZpn1qheirv.jpg\" width=\"150px\" title=\"\">While Aldershot doesn&rsquo;t readily spring to mind as a musical hotbed, it has previously spawned the likes of Hundred Reasons and Reuben. <strong>twothirtytwo<\/strong> are the latest to attempt to break out from the garrison town, and they&rsquo;ve certainly laid down a marker with promising EP<em> \u2018The Hope We Had\u2019.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Dark, moody and atmospheric, <strong>twothirtytwo<\/strong> play intelligent and literate alt-rock that lies somewhere between the stadium-sized sounds of The National and David Bowie\u2019s warbling theatrics. It\u2019s an odd juxtaposition, but once you can get your head around this you\u2019re in for a treat.<!-- more --><\/p>\n<p>Opener <em>\u2018Bones\u2019<\/em> is the pick of the five songs on offer, and if they can match this over the course of an album then <strong>twothirtytwo<\/strong> could be on the cusp of something really special. Jangly but grand \u2013 like Idlewild circa <em>\u2018The Remote Part\u2019<\/em> \u2013 it\u2019s blessed with a monolithic chorus that would fill any stage across the country.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twothirtytwo.bandcamp.com\/album\/the-hope-we-had\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Hope We Had by twothirtytwo<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, <strong>twothirtytwo<\/strong> are no one-trick pony and, although the other four songs don\u2019t match the brilliance of <em>\u2018Bones\u2019<\/em>, there\u2019s still a couple of other quality cuts of offer. <em> \u2018Epitaph\u2019<\/em> has a bit of drive about it (and some rather great backing vocals), while <em> \u2018The Reprieve\u2019<\/em> could sit alongside anything on Lonely The Brave\u2019s <em> \u2018The Day\u2019s War\u2019<\/em> and hold its own.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, it\u2019s only the title track and its somewhat clich\u00e9d lyrics that let the release down. Even then, it\u2019s still excellently arranged and expertly played, with the percussive elements \u2013 all rolling drums and gorgeously twinkling xylophone keys \u2013 being particularly impressive.
