\"\"Already home to the likes of Frank Turner, Ben Marwood, and Canadian troubadour Northcote, it\u2019s not a stretch to say Xtra Mile<\/strong> know a little something about singer-songwriters. It\u2019s therefore no surprise to see Billy the Kid<\/strong> (AKA Billy Pettinger) on their roster \u2013 especially considering her latest offering, \u2018Horseshoes & Hand Grenades\u2019<\/em>, is something a little bit special.<\/p>\n

Naturally, being a singer-songwriter, the focus is very much on the guitar and vocals arrangements. Billy<\/strong>\u2019s blessed with a wonderful, earthy and soulful voice, with just enough of a punk edge and rasp to keep things interesting. She can also pen a tune or two, and while \u2018Horseshoes & Hand Grenades\u2019<\/em> veers from straight up indie-rock to alt-country and gentle ballads, she proves she\u2019s adept at any style she turns her hand to.<\/p>\n

That said, the up tempo punk\u2019n\u2019roll blasts of \u2018Back to You\u2019<\/em> and \u2018Lord Let Me\u2019<\/em> are the undoubted highlights. Played with passion and drive, as well as mixing storytelling and hyper-personal lyrics, they ensure \u2018Horseshoes & Hand Grenades\u2019<\/em> is as memorable as it is instant.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Elsewhere, the lovely \u2018Thoroughfare\u2019<\/em> is a really stripped back, gentle, affair, while the meandering \u2018Virginia\u2019<\/em> and \u2018Chelsea Rose\u2019<\/em> showcase her talents away from the three minute pop songs. Also, it\u2019s a blessed relief that her duet with Frank Turner, ( \u2018This Sure As Hell Ain\u2019t My Life\u2019<\/em>), while not the strongest song on the album, doesn\u2019t sound like a cheap cash in.<\/p>\n

In terms of style and delivery, an easy comparison could be made with Allison Weiss, and if you\u2019re a fan of the New York based singer, you\u2019ll almost certainly fall in love with this. Equally, there\u2019s more than enough depth, quality and variety to \u2018Horseshoes & Hand\u2019 Grenades\u2019<\/em> to ensure this Kid<\/strong> can stand on her own two feet.<\/p>\n
