{"id":1972,"date":"2017-06-07T11:20:07","date_gmt":"2017-06-07T11:20:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/review-crake-by-the-slime-mould\/"},"modified":"2018-03-21T22:15:52","modified_gmt":"2018-03-21T22:15:52","slug":"review-crake-by-the-slime-mould","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/review-crake-by-the-slime-mould\/","title":{"rendered":"Review: Crake &#8211; By The Slime Mould"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><figure class=\"tmblr-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/4f9822de1204523276b3ea544374b3ce\/tumblr_oczgq9lfGb1r8no6so1_r49_1280.jpg\" width=\"250em\" alt=\"\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n<p>There\u2019s an earthen, rustic beauty to <b>Crake<\/b>\u2019s <i>\u2018By the Slime Mould\u2019<\/i>, the Wakefield\/Leeds group\u2019s oh-so-short 3-song EP. <\/p>\n<p>With nods to Belle &amp; Sebastian, Hop Along and Big Thief, \u2018By The Slime Mould\u2019 is essentially 3 sparse and hushed confessionals, delicate and lilting but silkily arranged and deftly played. <\/p>\n<p>Musically sparse, <i>\u2018By The Slime Mould\u2019<\/i> is a mixture of soft drums and gentle guitars, which serve as mere accompaniment to Rowan Sandle\u2019s devastatingly beautiful vocals and intimate lyrics. Of course, such musicality should come as no surprise; <b>Crake<\/b> features members of Leeds\u2019 Mi Mye, The Spills and Esper Scout. This talent ensures there is a roughhewn charm to all three of the songs on offer, each refracting and reflecting different sides to <b>Crake<\/b>\u2019s charming indie\/folk rock. <\/p>\n<p><!-- more --><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/crake.bandcamp.com\/album\/by-the-slime-mould\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">By the Slime Mould by Crake<\/a><\/p>\n<p><i>\u2018I Should Listen To Emily\u2019<\/i>, for example builds to a blustering conclusion (this, is of course, relative \u2013 it\u2019s still all rather low key), but it feels like a gusty breeze blowing hard over the open and blasted Yorkshire Moors. Organic and with just enough edge, it\u2019s the mounting grey skies on the horizon, adding texture and mood to an EP that you could easily get lost in. <\/p>\n<p><i>\u2018Sisters\u2019<\/i>, meanwhile, is an unpolished and low-key beauty, possessing some gorgeous harmonies and melodies that complement a gorgeous horn-line and some biting lyricism. Like the EP, it\u2019s frustratingly and devastatingly brief \u2013 but this only serves to add to the allure of <b>Crake<\/b>. <\/p>\n<p>Best of all, however, is the gently rolling <i>\u2018Anglesey\u2019<\/i>. Harking back to the likes of the Lemonheads in their quieter, more reflective moments, it\u2019s a delightful slice of alt-rock. The hooks are buried deep, but it is insidiously infectious, rattling around the brain long after it\u2019s finished. <\/p>\n<p>Of course, the problem with such a short EP is that it serves as a tantalising introduction to <b>Crake<\/b>.
