Having released one of the most impressive UK metal releases of the year so far in ‘Darkness of an Age’<\/em>, London five piece Exist Immortal<\/strong> are riding a wave of momentum. With their mix of chugging riffs and soaring melodies, Exist Immortal<\/strong> recently made their return to UK Tech Fest<\/strong>; their third appearance in as many years.<\/p>\n After being one of the highlights of the weekend<\/a>, we caught up with four-fifths of the band to discuss their return to Tech Fest<\/strong>, future plans and we find out what is on their van stereo playlist.<\/p>\n Already Heard: Can we get your names and role in band?<\/strong> David: I\u2019m David. I play bass.<\/em><\/p>\n Meyrick: I\u2019m Meyrick and I sing.<\/em><\/p>\n Kurt: I\u2019m Kurt and play guitar.<\/em><\/p>\n AH: It\u2019s your third time at Tech Fest. As \u201cveterans\u201d of the festival, how does it feel to back here again?<\/strong> Tom: But its cool to be added to this bill. I mean anytime you get to support The Ocean and Sikth. It\u2019s just cool to be back, and having seen the festival grow from strength to strength in size every year. It\u2019s a cool place to be.<\/em><\/p>\n AH: What do you like about Tech Fest most?<\/strong> David: The community. <\/em><\/p>\n Kurt: You walk 5 minutes, and you bump into a friend. <\/em><\/p>\n Meyrick: There\u2019s no beef with anyone, and there\u2019s no divide between bands and crowd. You just wonder around seeing people you know. I like to call it \u201cHang Fest\u201d haha.<\/em><\/p>\n AH: Have you been here all weekend?<\/strong> David: We\u2019ve been here since Friday evening.<\/em><\/p>\n AH: Who have you seen so far?<\/strong> David: Jom Gomm was spectacular yesterday. <\/em><\/p>\n Meyrick: It was the chillest thing. <\/em><\/p>\n AH: So \u2018Darkness of an Age\u2019<\/em> recently came out. How has the response been so far?<\/strong> AH: We gave it a 4 out of 5 rating.<\/strong> AH: Was the album quite awhile in the making?<\/strong> David: They\u2019ve been around for a long time. <\/em><\/p>\n Meyrick: There was even a song that wasn\u2019t possibly going to be on our last record but it ended up getting completely reworked.<\/em><\/p>\n David: Yeah in terms of that, the ideas have been around for quite a while. The process of actually creating the album has been short. <\/em><\/p>\n Meyrick: We practically sat down and thought \u201cwe better make an album\u201d\u201d and we did. <\/em><\/p>\n David: It came together in about 2 months.<\/em><\/p>\n Kurt: We were always together.<\/em><\/p>\n David: And it was the middle of winter so there was no sunlight hence the title \u2018Darkness of an Age.\u2019 (all laugh)<\/em><\/p>\n AH: I remember we did an e-mail interview with Tom a few months back, and I recall you talking about you choosing the music in the van.<\/strong> AH: What\u2019s been on the playlist lately?<\/strong> David: Baby Metal!<\/em><\/p>\n Tom: I can tell you exactly. We\u2019ve had a bit of Baby Metal and Childish Gambino. We\u2019ve had Sigur Ros, Steel Panther of course! Rick Ross. A bit of Opeth.<\/em><\/p>\n David: A bit of Kendrick Lamar.<\/em><\/p>\n Tom: A bit of Juicy J.<\/em><\/p>\n Meyrick: The Hell! The Hell have been good.<\/em><\/p>\n Tom: And Within Temptation. We tend to go something hip-hop and really fucking stupid. The stupid option goes from anyway like Closure In Moscow to power metal to Within Temptation.<\/em><\/p>\n Meyrick: We keep it very broad.<\/em><\/p>\n AH: Keep you guessing. Next up you have some UK dates. Looking forward to going back out on the road?\u00a0<\/strong> Meyrick: We pratically live on the road. We\u2019re playing a bunch of places we normally find it quite difficult to hit, as they\u2019re either really far North or just not on the way to anywhere, so its kind of tying up loose ends tour. <\/em><\/p>\n Tom: Scotland expecially. It\u2019s really hard to get up there. The distance and cost is ridiculous. So it is nice to go North and just do it properly, then it\u2019s ticked off and we\u2019re not leaving anyone out. It\u2019s also quite pretty there at this time of year. (all laugh)<\/em><\/p>\n AH: For those who haven\u2019t seen you before and didn\u2019t see you today at Tech Fest, why should they come and see you on these dates?<\/strong> AH: It\u2019s all about the hair.<\/strong> David: The music is alright as well. (all laugh)<\/em><\/p>\n Meyrick: We go \u201cwow\u201d alot! No it\u2019s heavy, it\u2019s medlodic, it\u2019s epic.<\/em><\/p>\n Kurt: Melodic heavy groove.<\/em><\/p>\n Meyrick: It\u2019s kind of a soundscape live.<\/em><\/p>\n Kurt: Yeah. <\/em><\/p>\n Tom: We put in exactly we want to see from the crowd, so we\u2019re adjectively trying to up ourselves so we can only hope the crowd gets that. <\/em><\/p>\n AH: Following these dates, what else do you have in the works?<\/strong> David: A bunch of tours including some European shows. We\u2019re playing MammothFest in Brighton at the end of August. <\/em><\/p>\n Meyrick: A whole bunch of stuff. We\u2019re just waiting to announce it.<\/em><\/p>\n AH: Any word on the follow up to the album?<\/strong> Tom: We try and not to have a 2 month brain-melting session like we did with the first album. Meyrick: Yes and no I guess because there are a couple of songs that are on there are old, like the ideas are old.<\/em><\/p>\n
Tom: Not through any particular desire of mine, I normally ride shotgun.<\/em><\/p>\n
Meyrick: (laughs)<\/em><\/p>\n
David: Definitely.<\/em><\/p>\n
Meyrick and Tom: We have awesome hair! (all laugh)<\/em><\/p>\n
Meyrick: We\u2019re so gay.<\/em><\/p>\n
Meyrick: We\u2019ve got a bunch of tours we can\u2019t talk about yeah.<\/em><\/p>\n
Kurt: We\u2019re writing as we go along. <\/em><\/p>\n
Tom: Yeah exactly. You can\u2019t record stuff as it comes. The worst thing that could possibly happen is that one of us comes up with a really good riff, and we don\u2019t get round to recording it. So we just record as we\u2019re going and when we have an idea we\u2019ll put it down. At some point it might turn into a song. So we\u2019re always writing and recording.<\/em><\/p>\n
