Nicknamed <em>&lsquo;The Blue Album&rsquo;<\/em>, it\u2019s responsible for sparking the careers of hundred bands, <strong>You Blew It!<\/strong> included. So it seems fitting that during the 20<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary of the album\u2019s release that <strong>You Blew It!<\/strong> chose to release a covers EP of songs from that iconic album.<\/p>\n<p>Of course it can be a tough challenge to cover such well known songs, so <strong>You Blew It!<\/strong> have played it safe. There\u2019s no <em>\u2018Buddy Holly\u2019<\/em> or <em>\u2018Sweater Song\u2019 <\/em>here, instead they\u2019ve stuck to album tracks <em>\u2018Surf Wax America\u2019<\/em>, \u2018<em>In the Garage\u2019<\/em>, \u2018<em>Only in Dreams\u2019,<\/em> \u2018<em>My Name is Jonas\u2019<\/em> and a B-Side, \u2018<em>Suzanne\u2019.<!-- more --><\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>The songs are more or less straight covers but with subtle differences, such as the lack of the acoustic guitar solo in<em> \u2018My Name is Jonas\u2019 <\/em>and a few light key changes.\u00a0 Vocally, Tanner Jones has elements of Rivers about him, and this gives <em>&#8216;You Blue It&rsquo;<\/em>\u00a0a familiar feel, like listening to <em>&#8216;The Blue Album&rsquo;<\/em> through distortion.\u00a0 It\u2019s hard to reinvent a solidly good album, so <strong>You Blew It!<\/strong> don\u2019t even try, simply choosing to pay tribute to these great songs.<\/p>\n<p>Out of the five songs covered, a stripped down, laid-back <em>\u2018Suzanne\u2018 <\/em>and a slightly reworked <em>\u2018My Name as Jonas\u2019<\/em> stand out as highlights.\u00a0 <em>\u2018My Name is Jonas\u2018<\/em> is probably the most familiar of the songs covered here, and even for those with only a passing knowledge of Weezer, the covers still work as standalone tracks.<\/p>\n<p>Enjoyable for both Weezer and <strong>You Blew It!<\/strong> fans, while this brings nothing new to this set of songs<em>, \u2018You Blue It\u2019<\/em> is a nice tribute piece and does each version justice &#8211; undoubtedly a worthy addition to anyone who has ever sung along to a Weezer song.<\/p>\n<p>4\/5<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8216;You Blue It&rsquo;<\/em> by <strong>You Blew It! <\/strong>is out now on <strong>Topshelf Records<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You Blew It!<\/strong> links:<a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/youblewitfl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Facebook<\/a>|<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/youblewit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a>|<a href=\"http:\/\/youblewit.bandcamp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bandcamp<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Words by Jay Sullivan<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Weezer\u2019s self-titled 1994 release needs no real introduction.
