Self-proclaimed Northern Bastards Black Dogs<\/strong> have been turning heads up and down the UK for quite awhile now. Last year\u2019s debut full-length, ‘Grief’,<\/em> contained some of the most punishing splices of metalcore we\u2019ve heard in sometime. Songs like recent single ’13 Bastards’<\/em> and ‘Savages’<\/em> are incredibly intense yet we just can\u2019t get enough.<\/p>\n Currently on tour once again in the UK, and having played numerous festivals in recent months, we caught up with 3 fifths of the band at Sonisphere<\/strong> to discuss the video for ’13 Bastards’<\/em>, becoming a five-piece, and the follow-up to ‘Grief’<\/em>.<\/p>\n Already Heard: To begin with can we get your names and role in the band?<\/strong> Zakk: I\u2019m Zakk. I play bass.<\/em><\/p>\n Canty: I\u2019m Canty. I play drums.<\/em><\/p>\n AH: You played earlier today on the Jagermeister stage. How was it?<\/strong> Canty: Wicked!<\/em><\/p>\n Zakk: Absolutely awesome. We were well received. A full tent of people and we got a wall of death to finish off the set. <\/em><\/p>\n AH: Is this your first time at Sonisphere?<\/strong> AH: Enjoying it so far?<\/strong> Canty: It\u2019s pretty well laid out. <\/em><\/p>\n Gollo: And the weather as well. You can\u2019t ask for better weather.<\/em><\/p>\n Zakk: I\u2019m a bit too hot if anything.<\/em><\/p>\n AH: We hear you\u2019ve got a new video\/single out?<\/strong> Zakk: It\u2019s very cinematic. Even if you\u2019ve not heard the band before, it\u2019s worth checking out.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n AH: Just for those who haven\u2019t heard you before, how would you describe your band?<\/strong> Canty: Filthy.<\/em><\/p>\n Gollo: Just a bastard group.<\/em><\/p>\n AH: You recently played both Camden Rocks and Ghostfest. How were they?<\/strong> Zakk: Obviously Camden Rocks was sort of a different place. It was a posher place\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n Gollo: It\u2019s always encourging to get that response.<\/em><\/p>\n AH: Going back to playing on the Jagermeister stage earlier, is that something you\u2019re more comfortable with?<\/strong> AH: I noticed you had a line-up change recently. Can you tell us about that?<\/strong> AH: Where\u2019s that?<\/strong> Canty: We can\u2019t tell you the details to our camp!<\/em><\/p>\n Zakk: People might try and get us.<\/em><\/p>\n Canty: We\u2019re writing again and just working towards the next release. We got \u00a0loads of shows coming up as well.<\/em><\/p>\n Gollo: Yeah we\u2019ve got a bunch of dates off the back of the festival. We\u2019ve got the first date in Southampton on Sunday, so we\u2019re unfortunately having to leave Sonisphere a bit early. So its a headline run all through the week, we\u2019ve got (UK) Tech Fest on Friday and we\u2019re supporting Devil Sold His Soul on Saturday. So it\u2019s going to be a good week for us.<\/em><\/p>\n AH: Are there any bands you\u2019re looking forward to seeing at Tech Fest?<\/strong> AH: As you mentioned you\u2019ve been writing. Is there a new record in the works?<\/strong> AH: Any aim as to when you want to have it out?<\/strong> Gollo: We\u2019ve got a big stock of riffs called the \u201cwank bank\u201d. Its just a big stash of riffs.<\/em><\/p>\n Canty: So yeah, we\u2019ve always got plenty of riffs going, so we\u2019ll get that out soon.<\/em><\/p>\n AH: So basically it\u2019s done when it\u2019s done?<\/strong> AH: So after the tour and festivals, is that when you\u2019re going to crack on with writing?<\/strong> Canty: The writing process is like the band, its intense. We lock ourselves in there.<\/em><\/p>\n AH: Do you write as a group?<\/strong> AH: Any final words to close this interview?<\/strong> Zakk: Cheers for having us play the festival with the (40th) anniversary and everything. All: Yeah.<\/em><\/p>\n
Gollo: Yeah, good mate.<\/em><\/p>\n
Gollo: Yeah for ’13 Basatrds’<\/em>. We shot it in Wales. It\u2019s had a really good response. It\u2019s a pretty dark video.<\/em><\/p>\n
Gollo: Horrible (laughs).<\/em><\/p>\n
Gollo: Both really good. Just a really responsive crowd, which is something we\u2019re finding a lot more at recent shows. <\/em><\/p>\n
Gollo: I\u2019d be quite happy walking out on to that main stage.<\/em><\/p>\n
Gollo: Yeah. We used to be a four-piece but now we\u2019re a five-piece. We\u2019ve got 2 new guitarists so we\u2019re getting into the writing process now. We\u2019ve all sort of semi-moved from one Northern location to another.<\/em><\/p>\n
Gollo: Just North. You don\u2019t need to know!<\/em><\/p>\n
Gollo: Sikth a hundred times. Just Sikth. It can just be \u201cSikth Fest\u201d and that\u2019d be fine. And then us as well.<\/em><\/p>\n
Canty: As I’ve said, we released \u2018Grief\u2019 last November, and that was well received. So we\u2019ve been in the process with the new guitarist. So we\u2019re literally just started writing for the next record now.<\/em><\/p>\n
Canty: As far as having it out, we\u2019re not really there yet but we usually don\u2019t tend to take to long to get an album out.<\/em><\/p>\n
Gollo: Yeah. We\u2019ve got the pieces to the puzzle, we\u2019re just putting them together now. <\/em><\/p>\n
Gollo: We\u2019ll get things sorted. We will knuckle down. We\u2019ve just moved into a new practise room, which is where we tend to lock ourselves away. We will be writing and living there. It\u2019s nice and big apparently, I\u2019ve not seen it yet. We\u2019ll be mooching in there for a while getting it done. <\/em><\/p>\n
Canty: Yeah mainly. We\u2019ll have guys writing riffs and bringing ideas to the table, then it all comes together. <\/em><\/p>\n
