In many ways this review could begin and end with that sentence. If you\u2019re down with those bands, you\u2019ll likely be down with <strong>Salem Rages<\/strong>. If you\u2019re not, you likely won\u2019t. Of course there\u2019s more to it than a simple \u2018FFO:\u2019 list. For a start <em>\u2018Aspects of the Deepest Gloom\u2019<\/em> isn\u2019t as untouchable as those masters. It\u2019s an excellent debut though. Dark and theatrical \u2013 recorded in Yorkshire because that\u2019s the last place in England to see a woman burned as a witch. Recorded in a storm. It reeks of showmanship but remains organic, as if grown from the charred earth beneath the stake.<\/p>\n<p>Following instrumental introduction <em>\u20181692\u2019<\/em> (the year of the Salem Witch Trials, of course), <strong>Salem Rages<\/strong> tears through next half hour in style. Starting strong but growing as the record moves on. <em> \u2018B.A.T.S.\u2019 <\/em> (<em> \u201cBurn at the stake!\u201d <\/em>) is excellent. Following track <em> \u2018New Grave\u2019<\/em> has a creepy piano intro before combusting into more gloom punk magic. Earlier, <em> \u2018Thirteen Times\u2019<\/em> (these song names should be telling you what to expect of this record) could be Joy Division covering The Cure. Penultimate track, <em> \u2018Fall Of Greatness\u2019<\/em> is top pick though. Featuring some Davey Havok-esque soaring vocals this track nails down the band\u2019s fantastic sound.<!-- more --><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>It wouldn\u2019t be gloom\/goth\/melancholy to end an album without a creepy, slow, chant introduced closer though? Soft vocals, sustained guitars, played over strong, rolling drums. <em> \u2018Purging The Flowers\u2019<\/em> is a perfect closing track from a band with influences on their sleeves and the dramatic in their hearts.
