\"\"Goober Patrol <\/strong>kick things off to a good start with \u2018That\u2019s the Point\u2019,<\/em> a great anthem about the state of music today, declaring \u201cpunk rock has lost its shock, diluted for the masses\u201d. <\/em>So it\u2019s a shame that after such a promising start that the rest of their offerings on \u2018Split LP\u2019 <\/em>vary from boring to downright annoying. Sounding a little bit like Cocksparrer in delivery (bar the England Belongs to Me-type bigotry), any of Goober Patrol<\/strong>\u2019s songs could have been written by a 1970\u2019s punk band, and \u2018Tory\u2019<\/em> (which has a seemingly endless refrain of \u201cHe\u2019s a Tory\u201d) <\/em>only remains up-to-date by a reference to \u201csick of paying for your-second home\u201d<\/em>.\u00a0 Goober Patrol<\/strong>\u2019s music is full of these kinds of repetitive, chanting lyrics, the kind of songs that sound great when you\u2019re pissed because they\u2019re easy to follow along with, but quickly become irritating when heard multiple times. \u2018Coconuts\u2019<\/em> does exactly what it says, barking the lines \u201cHave you seen my coconuts?\u201d<\/em> over and over (it concludes that they haven\u2019t seen them, in case you were concerned). This is the kind of lyricism that even Reel Big Fish or NOFX would be unlikely to touch, and at least they\u2019d throw some horns in to apologise. \u2018Man of the People\u2019<\/em> \u00a0does in fact throw in a mix of instruments, including an accordion and what sounds like a kazoo to switch things up, but it\u2019s not enough to beg repeat listens.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, 7 Day Conspiracy<\/strong>\u2019s section isn\u2019t much better. The main issue is that both bands sound incredibly similar, so instead of bringing something different to the table, the songs are more or less interchangeable.\u00a0 7 Day Conspiracy<\/strong> tracks are slightly less abrasive to listen to, with some more harmonious melodies and \u2018The Mill\u2019<\/em> even has a nice piano introduction. However, just when you think you\u2019ve escaped the sounds of pissed-up blokes shouting at you, they choose to close the album with \u2018Berkshire Hunt\u2019,<\/em> which, if you aren\u2019t adept at rhyming slang, just features the lines \u201cYou\u2019re a cunt\u201d <\/em>repeated over and over. Actually there are some verses in there too, but they\u2019re drowned out by the cunt declarations, kind of like trying to listen to music through headphones on a packed train carriage heading back from an Arsenal game.<\/p>\n

If you want punk music for being obnoxiously drunk to, this is for you. It\u2019s shouty and simplistic, like a drunk that gets stuck in a loop and repeats the same thing over. I guess you could say its music for Berkshire hunts.<\/p>\n
