\"\"They say you shouldn\u2019t judge a book by its cover and you probably shouldn\u2019t judge an album by its title. However, with Seahaven<\/strong>\u2019s latest effort, \u2018Reverie Lagoon: Music For Escapism\u2019<\/em>, the Torrance, CA band are being blunt and direct, but don\u2019t let that deter from listening to it, as the 14 songs on offer here take you on a gentle, compelling musical journey that leaves a lasting impression.<\/p>\n

Throughout the combination of the band\u2019s bluesy, atmospheric approach and their sun-swept Southern California cool-tone grabs a hold of you. Early highlights such as recent single ‘Silhouette (Latin Skin)\u2019<\/em> are slow-burning and delicate with sweeping strings that adds the band\u2019s aching tone. Whilst ‘Wild West Selfishness\u2019<\/em> is dominated by intricate, dizzying guitars that burst at the conclusion with vibrancy.<\/p>\n

Admittedly fans who are more accustomed to Seahaven<\/strong>\u2019s more indie rock\/emo sound of previous releases may struggle to grasp an understanding of what ‘Reverie Lagoon\u2019<\/em> is all about. Nevertheless, there are \u201crockier\u201d moments; ‘Flesh\u2019<\/em> has twisting guitars before hitting the chorus with a strong hook, which some may consider to \u201cwake up\u201d the record.<\/p>\n

However, it\u2019s the band\u2019s more dreamy, lighter approach that truly makes ‘Reverie Lagoon\u2019<\/em> shine. Throughout, there are interludes that reverb and shimmer adding a comforting momentum to the record. Whilst the airy, acoustic ‘Highway Blues\u2019<\/em> gives the band a sense of admirable coolness, something vocalist Kyle Soto continues throughout. On ‘Love To Burn\u2019<\/em> his delivery comes as lazy and mumbled yet that\u2019s a certain swagger in his voice that is simply ideal.<\/p>\n

A later highlight is the stunning piano ballad ‘Solar Eclipse\u2019<\/em> with its haunting keys and Soto\u2019s sorrowing vocals, which are filled with guilt and passion. It\u2019s a pure and beautiful combination that leaves you compelled and stunned.<\/p>\n

On the whole ‘Reverie Lagoon\u2019<\/em> can be taken two ways. It can be either seen as an accomplished, mesmerising record from a band that is moving away from their former indie rock\/emo sound, or it can be seen as a dreary, self-absorbed record that on further listens seems a bit lifeless.<\/p>\n

My initial reaction was the former. The band\u2019s dreamy, atmospheric tone was a welcomed move away from the band\u2019s \u201cwhiny\u201d style I felt hindered 2011\u2019s ‘Winter Forever\u2019<\/em>. However on further inspection, I get the feeling there are fewer standout moments than I first thought, with the band\u2019s escapist approach simply adding coherence to the record.<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, I\u2019m sure with the summer months approaching, I can see ‘Reverie Lagoon: Music For Escapism Only\u2019<\/em> serving as my summer evening soundtrack. Whilst it may be flawed for being somewhat one dimensional, Seahaven<\/strong> has certainly created a record that you can escape and get lost in.<\/p>\n
