I grew up on The Movielife, enjoyed his solo EP from last year, and loved the heavier sounds of Peace\u2019d Out. I Am The Avalanche<\/strong> are no exception, and their 2011 self-titled release was one of my favourites of that year. It\u2019s safe to say I was really excited to listen to \u2018Wolverines<\/em>\u2019 and thankfully, it definitely doesn\u2019t disappoint.<\/p>\n

Opening the album is \u2018Runaways\u2019, <\/em>a song sung from a (mostly) third-person perspective, an unusual move for I Am The Avalanche<\/strong>. At first I anticipated the rest of the album to be in this style, a collection of observations and personal stories, but second track \u2018177\u2019<\/em> puts that idea to rest quickly, with a two-minute blast of post-punk similar to I Am The Avalanche<\/strong> tracks of past.<\/p>\n

\u2018Wolverines\u2019<\/em> lacks the catchiness of previous releases, there\u2019s no \u2018Holy Fuck\u2019<\/em> or \u2018This One\u2019s On Me\u2019<\/em> to grab your attention, and because of this, it takes up until single \u2018The Shape I\u2019m In\u2019<\/em> to really grab my attention. This is the first proper sing-along track on the album and it\u2019s super catchy, as is \u2018Young Keroaucs\u2019<\/em> the song that proceeds it. Caruana uses rhyming couplets as the basis for his song-writing,\u00a0 and while this could easily come across as juvenile, his powerful, heartfelt delivery makes lines like, \u201cYoung Kerouacs, before it all went black\u201d<\/em>, seem like deep moments of introspective observation. It\u2019s a real skill and gives I Am The Avalanche<\/strong> a real driving force behind their music.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

There\u2019s no shortage of great song writing to be found on \u2018Wolverines\u2019<\/em>, such as album highlight \u2018Anna Lee\u2019<\/em>,\u00a0 which contains the kind of relatable lyrics that you can\u2019t help project yourself on such as \u201cYou love your fucked up friends even more because they don\u2019t pretend to have it figured out\u201d<\/em>, the crux of this song. ‘Save Your Name\u2019 <\/em>is similar in a way to \u2018You\u2019ve Got Spiders\u2019,<\/em> and boasts a great riff and an emotive sing-along bridge that is sure to become a crowd favourite. The best moment of this album however is closer \u2018One Last Time\u2019<\/em>, a surprisingly cutting track about the end of a friendship, with a spine-tingling crescendo where Vinnie barks, \u201cNow it\u2019s time to think my own fucking thoughts, now I have the keys to my own fucking locks\u201d;<\/em>\u00a0it\u2019s the kind of track that makes you want to punch the air in support.<\/p>\n

Overall, \u2018Wolverines\u2019<\/em> is a solid album, with great lyrics and some real sing-along moments. Its only downfall is that it\u2019s not as instantly catchy as its predecessors and sadly I suspect this may put people off at first listen. It\u2019s worth persevering with however; as this is one of the best-rounded releases I Am The Avalanche<\/strong> has ever produced.<\/p>\n
