{"id":2531,"date":"2017-04-10T14:09:11","date_gmt":"2017-04-10T14:09:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/review-super-american-disposable\/"},"modified":"2018-03-21T22:15:52","modified_gmt":"2018-03-21T22:15:52","slug":"review-super-american-disposable","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/review-super-american-disposable\/","title":{"rendered":"Review: Super American &#8211; Disposable"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><figure class=\"tmblr-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/2205f433b40148f8c9a278a5534e821d\/tumblr_oczgq9lfGb1r8no6so8_r4_1280.jpg\" width=\"250em\" alt=\"\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n<p>Nostalgia does funny things to the brain \u2013 and Buffalo, NY\u2019s <b>Super American<\/b> are hardwired to hit you with killer hooks that will make you think of all your favourite adolescent memories on the upbeat and contagious <i>\u2018Disposable\u2019<\/i>. <\/p>\n<p>In fact, <b>Super American<\/b> sound like the soundtrack to my mid-teens &#8211; US college-rock that would make the commercial end of MTV\u2019s Alternative Nation or the soundtrack of a dramatic coming-of-age film. <\/p>\n<p> <i>\u2018Disposable\u2019<\/i> certainly does not feel like a modern alt-rock record; its polished hooks and glistening choruses are easily digested and future-proofed for this and every summer after. Yet it doesn\u2019t feel dated either, despite the obvious and breezy nature of songs like <i>\u2018Feeling Better\u2019<\/i> and <i>\u2018Congratulations\u2019<\/i>. Instead <i>\u2018Disposable\u2019<\/i> exists in some sort of nostalgic timewarp; an anachronistic throwback that has timeless appeal. <\/p>\n<p><!-- more --><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/takethistoheartrecords.bandcamp.com\/album\/disposable\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Disposable by Super American<\/a><\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s this appeal that shines in spades. <i>\u2018Sloppy Jazz\u2019<\/i> is, without doubt, one of the most infectious songs you\u2019ll hear all year, it\u2019s <i>&ldquo;na-na-na-na&rdquo;<\/i> refrain cementing its position as a solid gold earworm, while <i>\u2018Dearly Beloved\u2019<\/i> swoops and soars and swoons in a manner that would make Rivers Cuomo throw down his songwriting pen in grudging admiration. <\/p>\n<p>Yet for all this, <i>\u2018Disposable\u2019<\/i> still takes me back to Third Eye Blind, Tonic, Fountains of Wayne and countless other college rock bands that litter my record collection. The beauty of such timeless songwriting is that <i>\u2018Disposable\u2019<\/i> will have the same relevance for today\u2019s teens as those acts had for me.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, making mid-30s grown men dewy-eyed probably wasn\u2019t what <b>Super American<\/b> were aiming for, but it\u2019s testament to how well executed <i>\u2018Disposable\u2019<\/i> is that it works for Millennials and today\u2019s grumpy old men.
