{"id":2603,"date":"2017-04-04T12:00:18","date_gmt":"2017-04-04T12:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/review-little-star-little-star\/"},"modified":"2018-03-21T22:15:52","modified_gmt":"2018-03-21T22:15:52","slug":"review-little-star-little-star","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/review-little-star-little-star\/","title":{"rendered":"Review: Little Star &#8211; Little Star"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><figure class=\"tmblr-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/81817f8b703bacc5326bb52706d89a99\/tumblr_onulm8JpU71r8no6so3_1280.jpg\" width=\"250em\" alt=\"\" title=\"\"><\/figure>\n<p><i>\u201cSometimes it feels like there\u2019s no way out\u201d<\/i> sings <b>Little Star<\/b>\u2019s Dan Byers on <i>\u2018Yamaguchi\u2019<\/i>, and while this sense of futility carries through this self-titled effort, it\u2019s a disarming moment in an album that is bruised and honest in equal measure. <\/p>\n<p>For the most part, <i>\u2018Little Star\u2019<\/i> is a gorgeously arranged, low-key and lo-fi album, punctured by moments of irreverent frustration (<i>\u2018Calming Ritual #2\u2019<\/i>) and flashes of anger and frustration that boil over as unfettered howls and jazzy freak-outs. At first it makes for a challenging listen; tortured and obstinate but driven by personality and a clear sense of self. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s made all the more confusing by the way in which <b>Little Star<\/b> make music that is subtly infectious and breezily unhurried, but simultaneously spiky and ragged. For example, <i>\u2018Linda Blair\u2019<\/i> fizzes with post-punk attitude, offset by some clear and obvious indie-pop hooks, Byers coming off like of Montreal\u2019s Kevin Barnes. <\/p>\n<p><!-- more --><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/little-star.bandcamp.com\/album\/little-star-3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Little Star by little star<\/a><\/p>\n<p>For some, such a blurring of boundaries and unfocussed nature will surely be too much. But then <b>Little Star<\/b> don\u2019t seem to be ones for writing easy hits, and this testing nature works well alongside the sombre subject matter.<\/p>\n<p>Yet for all this, <i>\u2018Little Star\u2019<\/i> does reward patience. Indeed, when they put all the pieces together it makes for thrilling music, coupling lyrical insight with music that feels like the same calm found in the eye of a hurricane.
