\"image\"A Loss for Words<\/strong>\u2019 2011 release \u2018No Sanctuary\u2019<\/em> was a great album out shadowed by the sheer quality of pop-punk releases that year. It was so good that they were instantly forgiven for the dire Motown covers album they released previously, which is saying something.<\/p>\n

What separates A Loss for Words<\/strong> from the general pop punk crowd is that Matty Arsenault can actually sing. His voice is so distinctive and pleasant to listen to that he could sing songs about practically anything and they\u2019d still be listenable. It comes as no surprise then that I had high expectations for ‘Before It Caves\u2019<\/em>, which probably goes part way to explaining why I was disappointed with it.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Starting with \u2018Distance\u2019,<\/em> a tired sounding road song with overused male and female perspective vocals, things weren\u2019t off to a good start. Luckily this is followed up by the super catchy single \u2018Before It Caves\u2019<\/em> which is reinforced by a cameo from The Wonder Years’ Soupy, those gravelly vocals complement Matty\u2019s smoother tones. It\u2019s a lot of fun to listen to and is destined to be a live favourite.<\/p>\n

Tracks three and four are where the issues begin to show, as \u2018Before It Caves\u2019<\/em> suffers from some terribly uninspired lyrics. Nearly all the songs on this album are about love or breaking up, which is fine, but the album is plagued by dull lyrics such as, \u201cWe\u2019re falling in love, never thought you\u2019d be the one.\u201d <\/em>I was hoping for lyrical development from their last album, but A Loss For Words<\/strong> seem to have stagnated in their song writing. There are a few great lines here, \u201cyour dead eyes spoke in a decimated language\u201d<\/em> from Eclipsed is a personal favourite, but there\u2019s also a lot of by-the-numbers stuff.<\/p>\n

However there are some great songs here, \u2018No Pioneer\u2019<\/em> is a cutting callout to an ex-girlfriend and \u2018No Merit to Envy\u2019<\/em> explores problems with jealous onlookers. \u2018The Torch and the Name\u2019<\/em> is as close as this album comes to a ballad, and makes for a refreshing change of pace. \u2018Brace Yourself\u2019<\/em> is the token acoustic number, and really showcases Matty\u2019s vocal range making it one of the highlights of the album.<\/p>\n

The standout track is the penultimate \u2018Siesta Key\u2019<\/em> where A Loss for Words <\/strong>declare that, \u201csome may say to hang it up but I won\u2019t quit until it\u2019s not fun.\u201d<\/em> The song seems to be the band\u2019s manifesto, and feels like one of the most heartfelt moments on the album. So it\u2019s a shame they decided to close the album with \u2018All Roads Lead to Home\u2019<\/em>, a track which already appeared on 2008\u2019s \u2018Webster Lake\u2019<\/em>, a needless addition that ends the album on a bum note.<\/p>\n

\u2018Before It Caves\u2019<\/em> is good, but it\u2019s not The Wonder Years mind-blowingly good, instead it\u2019s on par with this year\u2019s other solid releases, such as Real Friends and Save Your Breath. A Loss For Words<\/strong> deserve success, and it frustrates me that they\u2019ve let themselves down with a good, albeit flawed album. I can only hope that they up their game for their next album with better song writing and some new ideas.<\/p>\n
