Long Lost<\/strong> is a side project made up of members of Boston hardcore band Aviator and Transit vocalist Joe Boynton. Leaning more towards Transit\u2019s sound than Aviator\u2019s, \u2018Save Yourself, Start Again\u2019<\/em> is 30-minutes of tightly wound emo anthems and one of the strongest releases of the year so far.<\/p>\n

Back in April, Transit released the disappointing \u2018Young New England\u2019<\/em> which while an OK album in its own right, wasn\u2019t the follow up to the spectacular \u2018Listen & Forgive\u2019<\/em> we were all hoping for. It\u2019s being mentioned here because \u2018Save Yourself, Start Again\u2019 <\/em>is in essence the Transit album we all wanted and didn\u2019t get.<\/p>\n

Setting the tone from the off with opening line, \u201cFirst things first, he\u2019s no good for anyone\u201d<\/em>, \u2018Save Yourself, Start Again\u2019<\/em> is an exploration of heartbreak and the relationships, and even by Joe Boynton\u2019s standards, it feels incredibly personal. \u201cI can\u2019t get used to being used, it\u2019s too much to carry\u201d<\/em> Joe declares on \u2018Look Back and Wave\u2019<\/em> – this is the overarching theme for the album, every song screams tiredness of the situation and a desire to escape and start again.<\/p>\n

Of course, this isn\u2019t just a Transit B-side album and Aviator\u2019s Vinny Comeau is not only the second songwriter but also a second vocalist, and his harmonising blends well with Joe\u2019s lead vocals. \u2018Drive With Me\u2019<\/em> shows this at its best, with Comeau\u2019s dual vocals enhancing what could have otherwise been a run-of-the-mill song. Sadly however, the other members seem to be little more than a backing band, and the majority of the bass and drum work seems to fall by the wayside.<\/p>\n

Long Lost <\/strong>are the bitter, slightly-venomous cousin of Transit, their lyrics are harsher and the emotions behind them rawer. Boynton\u2019s lyrics are incredibly heavy on the metaphor, ranging from \u201cAvoiding each other\u2019s gaze like strangers on buses and trains, waiting for the whole thing to crash or derail\u201d<\/em> on \u2018Old News\u2019 <\/em>to \u201cI can be the misty haze that blankets your regret\u201d<\/em> on \u2018Want\u2019<\/em>. While many of the songs are in the emo-indie vein that we\u2019re familiar with from Transit, there are notable exceptions such as the brilliant American-highway tinged \u201cWild Hearts\u201d<\/em>, which is a step out of both the original bands comfort zones and pays off as a result.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

The only real problem with Long Lost <\/strong>is also its strength, Joe\u2019s vocals are so distinctive that it\u2019s hard for the band to escape the shadow of Transit \u2013 if given this album without knowing better you\u2019d automatically assume it was a Transit album. Joe\u2019s vocals overpower everything, and unless you\u2019re already a fan there\u2019s very little here different enough to draw you in.<\/p>\n

However despite this, \u2018Save Yourself, Start Again\u2019 <\/em>is an absolutely great album, and proof that when two brilliant bands get together the results can be magical. \u2018Save Yourself, Start Again\u2019 <\/em>boasts strong lyrics, powerful riffs and no duff tracks; it\u2019s one of the few albums that you\u2019ll want to hear all over again once it\u2019s finished. Long Lost<\/strong> are guaranteed to generate plenty of hype in the coming months, and for disillusioned Transit fans this album could be just what they need<\/a>.<\/p>\n
