This month it\u2019s violin-infused pop punk band <\/span><strong>Yellowcard<\/strong><span>, who to celebrate a decade since their breakout single and album <em>&lsquo;Ocean Avenue&rsquo;<\/em> first hit the charts, have reinvented the release acoustically.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The album itself is perfectly perfunctory, recreating the original album (including violin) by-the-numbers with no added thrills or extras.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>The main point to consider is, is there any need for an acoustic version of<em> &#8216;Ocean Avenue&rsquo;<\/em>? I don\u2019t really think so, and as a result it smacks a little of record label cash in.<!-- more --><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><\/span><span>The songs themselves haven\u2019t dated, still sounding as vibrant ten years ago. In fact the new versions of<\/span><em> &#8216;Way Away&rsquo;<\/em><span> and <\/span><em>&#8216;Breathing&rsquo;<\/em><span> sound virtually the same, however the still relentlessly popular <\/span><em>&#8216;Ocean Avenue&rsquo;<\/em><span> loses some of the urgency and catchiness when played acoustically.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">It\u2019s a mixed bag, some songs benefit from their new acoustic setting, many sound virtually identical and a few flounder. <em>&#8216;Twenty Three&rsquo;<\/em> is a highlight, slowing down but still retaining its sing-a-long factor, &rsquo;<em>A View From Heaven&rsquo;<\/em>\u2019s intro is improved, sounding slightly less like a frantic barn dance and drawing more attention to the song\u2019s lyrics. &rsquo;<em>Life Of A Salesman&rsquo;<\/em> however becomes unlistenable, with the endless repetition of \u201cdad\u201d in the verses becoming ear-bleedingly irritating.<span>\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Overall while there\u2019s nothing really wrong with this album, there\u2019s just no need for it. It doesn\u2019t capture the essence of what made the album great originally (like Taking Back Sunday\u2019s <em>&#8216;TAYF10&rsquo;<\/em>) and it fails to reinvent the songs in a new way (like Alkaline Trio\u2019s <em>&#8216;Damnesia&rsquo;<\/em>).
