Having toured with the likes of Parkway Drive and We Came As Romans, their latest effort ‘An Eye From An Eye’<\/em> is exactly what you\u2019d expect \u2013 ten tracks of shouty, aggressive metalcore. It\u2019s also surprisingly listenable.<\/p>\n

If you were anticipating lyrical maturity or emotional depth, you\u2019ll be sorely disappointed, as what Like Moths to Flames<\/strong> specialise in is dumb, paint-by-numbers music. If you remember to leave your brain at the door, it\u2019s a perfectly enjoyable listen. Filled with breakdowns, melodic choruses and simple lyrics to shout along to, it doesn\u2019t take much concentration to enjoy and there are plenty of hooks to draw you in.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

First track ‘You\u2019ll Burn’<\/em> kicks off the album with the same aggressive guitars and powerful vocals which tear through the next ten tracks. The lyrics are simplistic; \u201cI will gladly bite the hand that feeds, it doesn\u2019t feed enough\u201d, \u201cToo young, too young to be this fucked up\u201d<\/em> and \u201cFuck, fuck this life that only takes from me\u201d<\/em> are token examples and this means you\u2019ll catch yourself shouting along before you realise you\u2019re doing it. Songs cover standard ground for this genre, including loneliness, overcoming, standing your ground, and struggling with life. It\u2019s not a game changer, but it\u2019s acceptable.<\/p>\n

‘An Eye For An Eye’<\/em> has a couple of standout moments; the interlude before the breakdown on ‘I Solemnly Swear’<\/em> sounds great and just like every other metalcore album at the moment;\u00a0‘An Eye for an Eye’<\/em> is also bursting with token guest vocal spots. ‘Into the Ground’<\/em> features Shane from Silverstein and ‘Lord of Bones’<\/em> features Ahren from The Amity Affliction – while neither really gives extra depth to their track, it\u2019s still a nice extra.<\/p>\n

The low point of ‘An Eye For An Eye’<\/em> is ‘In Dreams’<\/em> which is absolutely dire, with Pierce the Veil-style clean vocals and dreadful lyrics. It\u2019s not something that should ever be inflicted on anyone; it also shows that Chris Roetter\u2019s vocals aren\u2019t really up to scratch.<\/p>\n

Like Moths to Flames<\/strong> are the kind of band you\u2019d probably never pay to see, but would really get into if they were a support band and you\u2019d had a few beers. ‘An Eye for an Eye’<\/em> is the same, it won\u2019t change your life but you\u2019ll enjoy it while it\u2019s playing. It’s worth a look, but don\u2019t rush out to grab it.<\/p>\n
