Our resident\u00a0Something For The Weekend<\/strong>\u00a0writer Rosie Kerr (Ebb & Flow PR) returns this week for a spoken word special.<\/p>\n

This week I decided to do something a little different. After recently reading a thread about spoken word artists, I realised how much it rekindled my love. So here are 3 artists that use spoken word elements and are currently driving me to write my own. The ‘for fans of’ this week will all be the same so I have not included them, but as a general gist; For Fans Of; Listener, La Dispute, and Merchant Ships.<\/p>\n

Mary Lambert<\/strong>
<\/span>Mary Lambert is usually an artist I wouldn’t cover. She’s not exactly an \u201cunderground\u201d artist having worked with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, but she is up & coming and should be recognised for her invaluable talent and her untouchable ethics. Her new single ‘She Keeps Me Warm’<\/em> is written from the chorus of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ song, ‘Same Love’<\/em>. It is an outwardly gay love song and no, she’s obviously not the first to sing about equal rights and loving someone of the same sex, but she has a high enough platform that her doing so actually means something. It is her song, ‘Body Love (Some Girls)’<\/em> that strikes the most beautiful chord though. A spoken word masterpiece.<\/span><\/p>\n

Levi The Poet\u00a0<\/strong>
<\/span>Levi The Poet<\/strong> is wonderful. I may not be a religious person myself but I find it very easy to both look past some of the religious messages, and appreciate that no matter what anyone believes, it’s almost inspiring to see someone have so much faith. His work is all spoken word, and he is incredibly talented and passionate. Having released a record in December of last year called ‘Seasons’<\/em>, Levi shows no sign of stopping any time soon.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dormancy<\/strong>
Dormancy<\/strong> is a long Island trio playing spoken word, midwest emo. They are the atypical midwest spoken word band, taking their influence from all the original contenders. Their most recent EP ‘Inner Thoughts Of Those Silent’<\/em> was only released very recently on the 11th July. Dormancy<\/strong> are more than just a spoken word act though, they combine their spoken word with some absolutely beautiful music which hits harder than the words themselves in places. They remind me highly of the song ‘Sleep Patterns’<\/em> by Merchant Ships and this is only a compliment beyond compliments as it’s one of my favourite songs of all time. At the end of all of this though, you should decide for yourself but I consider Dormancy to be one of the current leaders in this genre. <\/span><\/p>\n
