Earlier this year, when\u00a0<strong>Pariso<\/strong>\u00a0had an off-day\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/post\/49933217554\/live-review-narrows-coliseum-and-pariso-xoyo#.UeWZP43VCSo\" target=\"_blank\">supporting Narrows<\/a>, I dismissed their new material as<em> \u201ccharacterless and generic&quot;<\/em>. However, <em>&ldquo;Consanguinity&rdquo;<\/em>, which has been released completely spontaneously (<em>&ldquo;no build-up, no pre-order, no hype&rdquo;<\/em>, the band state as the rationale behind such a decision) puts my tail firmly in-between my legs; as though their approach is still mostly forceful and brawny, there is a considerable amount of heart behind this work; behind the fierce and aggressive exterior lies a &#8211; dare I say it &#8211; tender side, and consequently,<em> \u2018Consanguinity\u2019<\/em> shows a new dimension to\u00a0<strong>Pariso<\/strong>\u00a0rarely seen before.<\/p>\n<p>Previous full-length<em> \u2018Nothing Beyond Everything After\u2019<\/em>, which preceded this release by just over a year, was a juggernaut of a record with all the subtlety of a brick to the face. There are moments that recreate that level of ferocity, such as the one-two punch of <em>\u2018Maniai\u2019<\/em> and <em>\u2018Pigs\u2019<\/em> (two ready-made mosh pit favourites) that represent the more traditional\u00a0<strong>Pariso<\/strong>\u00a0aggression, it\u2019s when <em>\u2018Tower Of Genus\u2019<\/em> kicks in that things really get interesting. \u00a0Featuring the vocal talents of Katie Malco, this slower-paced number has a feel of latter-day Bring Me The Horizon about it, and may just be the most emotively raw thing\u00a0<strong>Pariso\u00a0<\/strong>have recorded to date.<!-- more --><\/p>\n<p>&amp;amp;amp;lt;a href=&ldquo;http:\/\/pariso.bandcamp.com\/album\/consanguinity&rdquo; data-mce-href=&ldquo;http:\/\/pariso.bandcamp.com\/album\/consanguinity&rdquo;&amp;amp;amp;gt;Consanguinity by Pariso&amp;amp;amp;lt;\/a&amp;amp;amp;gt;<\/p>\n<p>Another guest appearance, this time Daniel Mills of Cold World sharing the mic with\u00a0<strong>Pariso<\/strong>\u00a0vocalist Mazz Gambardella, on <em>\u2018Trolljegeren\u2019<\/em> triggers a more atmospheric take &#8211; the riffs are still gargantuan, but the album benefits from relenting its full-frontal assault, if only for a brief moment. The lyrical themes of this record are predominantly based around family and relationships, which inspires some introspective and moving lyrics from Gambardella, particularly on tracks like <em>\u2018Montserrat\u2019<\/em>. An injection of new blood into the South-East London quintet in the form of guitarist Alex Heffernan has served them well, as his technical attributes shine through on tracks like<em> \u2018The Separation\u2019<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2018Consanguinity\u2019<\/em> isn\u2019t without its faults &#8211; there are a couple too many throwaway tracks like <em>\u2018Methuselah\u2019<\/em> and <em>\u2018Equivocation\u2019<\/em> that distance it from greatness, but this record has definitely proved\u00a0<strong>Pariso<\/strong>\u00a0are more than a <em>&ldquo;silly t-shirt band&rdquo;<\/em> (the words of guitarist Alex Fitzpatrick, not mine). This has developed in the right direction from earlier efforts &#8211; another brutish display would have sounded a little stale, but Lewis Johns (producer of many fantastic UK hardcore records) has ably aided\u00a0<strong>Pariso<\/strong>\u00a0to discovering other facets to their output.
