Seattle\u2019s Dead Bars<\/b> are the<\/i> punk rock band of the moment, and with \u2018Dream Gig\u2019<\/i> the group have fulfilled the promise of their early EPs and split singles to deliver a life-affirming debut filled with wry humour, gargantuan sing-alongs and bags of heart and soul. <\/p>\n

Inspired by the album\u2019s title, Already Heard<\/b> sat down with founding members John Maiello (vocals) and C.J. Frederick (drums) to put together their dream five-band bill. <\/p>\n

Oh, and you might want to get to C.J.\u2019s early (naturally, it\u2019s a house show\u2026); Dead Bars<\/b> were adamant Shellshag<\/b> were opening, having hitched a ride in the van. “there’s only two of them”<\/i> pleads Frederick<\/b>, breaking the rules immediately.<\/p>\n

Guided By Voices <\/h2>\n

C.J. Frederick: I have never seen Guided By Voices<\/b>, but I\u2019ll actually get to see them in April when they play Seattle, and I\u2019m pretty excited about it.<\/i><\/p>\n

I\u2019ve been a fan of theirs for a long time. Weirdly enough, when we started making \u2018Dream Gig\u2019<\/i>, I was revisiting all of the music in my life \u2013 I\u2019m a record collector and a huge music fan in general \u2013 and there\u2019s something about Guided By Voices<\/b> that connected with me in terms of Dead Bars<\/b>. I think for the last two years, I\u2019ve been obsessed with Robert Pollard<\/b>, and that kind of ties in with when we made a start on \u2018Dream Gig\u2019<\/i>.<\/i><\/p>\n

John Maiello: We also have a Guided By Voices<\/b> cover band.<\/i><\/p>\n

C.J. Frederick:Holy shit, yeah! Only yesterday, we decided to start a Guided By Voices<\/b> covers band. We\u2019re called Hot Freaks<\/b>.<\/i><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Jay Reatard<\/h2>\n

C.J.: I genuinely think Jay Reatard<\/b> was a genius, but I never saw him live.<\/i><\/p>\n

I did email him this one time though, but I\u2019m slightly reluctant to tell someone in the press about it\u2026 <\/i><\/p>\n

I emailed him when I knew he was looking for a drummer, and I saw this video of him performing, and it genuinely looks like Jay<\/b> is pissing on the drummer\u2019s face. So I sent him an email, said I play the drums, I have my own drumkit and here\u2019s some stuff I\u2019ve recorded, \u2018Don\u2019t ever piss on my face,\u2019 and sent a link to the video that I was talking about.<\/i><\/p>\n

He wrote back real quick and said \u2018Hey man, that video, I didn\u2019t piss on anybody\u2019s face, it\u2019s just shot from a weird angle.\u2019 He was really cool about it. Thinking about it now, I don\u2019t think I should have done that, but sometimes I\u2019m just really impulsive. <\/i> <\/p>\n

I did actually look at the video again and he\u2019s dead right of course \u2013 it is just shot from a weird angle and he\u2019s not pissing on anyone\u2019s face. <\/i> <\/p>\n

The sad part of the story is that he passed away not long after. But like I said, I think he\u2019s a genius.<\/i> <\/p>\n

The Bouncing Souls<\/h2>\n

John: Growing up in New Jersey, when I think of a successful punk band, I think of The Bouncing Souls<\/b>. <\/p>\n

To me, they are everything I would want in a band. They own their own record label, they do their own artwork, they\u2019ve been together since they\u2019ve been in high-school. I think every person\u2019s dream is to start a band in your garage with your friend and do it for the rest of your life. When you\u2019re 15 you say that \u2013 we all said that \u2013 but I don\u2019t know of many bands that have actually done it \u2013 and for 30 years too. For me, that\u2019s success. <\/i> <\/p>\n

If I could ever play with, or even open for, The Bouncing Souls<\/b>, that\u2019s it for me. I\u2019ll feel like I\u2019ve made it. It wouldn\u2019t get better after that point. To get some recognition from them would validate what I\u2019ve been doing. It\u2019s corny, but that\u2019s how I feel.<\/i> <\/p>\n

Motorhead<\/h2>\n

John: I know it would be crazy for us to play with them, but Motorhead<\/b> would have to be on the bill. They\u2019re such an inspirational band, in a similar way to The \u2018Souls<\/b>. And that perseverance; doing exactly what you want to do without ever kowtowing to trends; they just stuck true to their sound. <\/i> <\/p>\n

The unfortunate thing is, since I\u2019ve lived in Seattle, they\u2019ve come through probably once a year, and every time I\u2019ve said \u2018Oh, I\u2019ll catch them next time\u2019. Which was insane, as Lemmy<\/b> was in his 60s \u2013 but I missed them every time and that is a regret that I do have. <\/i> <\/p>\n

And when they came through, they wouldn\u2019t even be playing arena shows. They\u2019d be playing clubs that hold 1,000 people. To have seen them somewhere like that would have been amazing.<\/i><\/p>\n

Iron Chic<\/h2>\n

C.J.: I guess John<\/b> will have to agree on this, but there aren\u2019t a lot of bands that when we\u2019re travelling, we can put on that makes us all happy. Definitely the first one that comes to mind is Iron Chic<\/b>. They\u2019re a band that for all of Dead Bars<\/b>, we can put on and we all feel it as this great unifying sound.<\/i><\/p>\n

John: That\u2019s a great last band. I think our first options were perhaps bands that influenced us as people, but Iron Chic<\/b>\u2026 When we started playing as Dead Bars<\/b> in 2013, Iron Chic<\/b> had put out their first full-length and maybe a couple of EPs, and I was big fan instantly. They never really toured out in the North West, and I\u2019d been living up here for a while so I kind of just thought of them as an East Coast band. <\/i> <\/p>\n

But we\u2019ve revisited all of their stuff. I think when we started putting out records, that kind of coincided with the release of their second record, \u2018The Constant One\u2019<\/i>, and it really clicked with us as a band.<\/i> <\/p>\n

Also, sometimes, you don\u2019t know what to expect from some bands nowadays; you could be like \u2018Oh, their first record was awesome, but I\u2019m not too sure about them now\u2019, but when \u2018The Constant One\u2019<\/i> came out, we were just like \u2018OH YEAH!\u2019 We could feel it. <\/i> <\/p>\n

What\u2019s cool about Iron Chic<\/b> is that we have actually played with them before, so we we\u2019ve already got a chance to be a part of what they\u2019re doing. Also, when we\u2019ve had questions about a booking or different things in the industry, C.J.<\/b> has reached out to Mike [Bruno] and I\u2019ve reached out to a couple of other people in the band, and they have been nothing but helpful and resourceful. They\u2019re like The [Bouncing] Souls too. They have their own record label, they record themselves, they do all their own artwork, they book themselves. How amazing is that? Everyone contributing to how a band should operate. It\u2019s awesome.<\/i><\/p>\n
