\"image\"August Burns Red<\/strong> have been on the scene for over a decade now, which in metalcore years, makes them veterans. They\u2019ve seen trends come and go, and have become jaded with a genre which used to push the boundaries but has since become a laughing stock. They\u2019re not the only ones.<\/p>\n

August Burns Red<\/strong> believe that the \u201cgenre used to be better than that. It can still be better than that.<\/em>\u201d And with their fifth album \u2018Rescue and Restore\u2019<\/em> they aim to put things right, promising to dish up something that pushes boundaries and gives something innovative to those who have grown tired of cliques. It\u2019s a noble gesture and raises the expectation bar for their latest full-length.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, this album fails to deliver. While I was expecting something new and exciting, ‘Rescue and Restore’<\/em> is a generic metalcore album with surplus classical instruments thrown in. \u2018Creative Captivity\u2019<\/em> has a mandolin and a trumpet solo, \u2018Treatment\u2019<\/em> features a violin and there\u2019s a couple of piano pieces dotted throughout. It\u2019s all fairly pleasant but it just feels unnecessary. Technically, the rest of the instrumentation is solid but not ground-breaking; skilled but not particularly inspiring.<\/p>\n

To make matters worse, two tracks on this album feature horrible spoken word sections. The line \u201cI can\u2019t hear your voice, but that\u2019s ok because I can feel you in my heart\u201d<\/em> during \u2018Beauty in Tragedy\u2019<\/em> is delivered with such deadly seriousness that it becomes hilarious, ruining any emotive punch it could have had. The soliloquy in \u2018Spirit Breaker\u2019<\/em> sounds worryingly like the \u201cDear Diary, mood: apathetic\u201d<\/em> spoof song that was popular in 2006. In fact, 90% of this album sounds like it could have been written in 2006; it doesn\u2019t feel modern or progressive at all.<\/p>\n

Lyrically, while better than other bands of the genre, it\u2019s still not awe-inspiring. The refrain in \u2018Fault Line’,<\/em>\u00a0\u201cWhisper your grief, scream your sorrow, proclaim your love, just don’t call me your hero\u201d<\/em> is guaranteed to be a crowd pleaser, it\u2019s catchy and stands out, making it the album’s highlight. \u2018Treatment\u2019<\/em> is also worth a listen, managing to be both heavy and intricate, and one of the few tracks on the album that begged a repeat play.<\/p>\n

While I respect August Burns Red<\/strong> of trying to revive a tired-genre, it just falls flat for me. In a genre where there\u2019s not much worth recommending, this stands head and shoulders above the rest of the dross \u2013 but with bands like Falling in Reverse and Asking Alexandria dominating the scene, that\u2019s not saying much.<\/p>\n
