Fortunately, their 8<\/span><sup>th<\/sup><span> album <em>\u2018Damage\u2018<\/em> is ten tracks of introspectively brilliant emo, taking the band back-to-basics as they deliberate on love and loss.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>Opener <em>\u2018Appreciation\u2019<\/em> is a break-up song but not one of the usual standards. <strong>Jimmy Eat World<\/strong> have honed their craft, filling the track with catchy riffs and upbeat drums, as James Adkins declares <em>\u201cwe build, we box, we carry on\u201d<\/em>. The main subject matter may be about heartbreak, but this is an anthem about picking up the pieces as well.<\/span><!-- more --><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>Next track<em> \u2018Book of Love\u2019<\/em> is a beautiful, country-tinged number. Incredibly similar to The Movielife\u2019s opus<em> \u2018Hey\u2019;<\/em>\u00a0it\u2019s refreshing to hear such a pared-back track when the rest of the album is so glossily produced. It\u2019s destined to be a fan favourite, which is fortunate as next track <em>\u2018Bye Bye Love\u2019<\/em> is painfully dull, endlessly repeating itself over a four-minute span. It\u2019s dire to listen to, but is redeemed by album title-track<em> \u2018Damage\u2019;\u00a0<\/em>a superbly catchy exploration of the lasting effects of love, which poses the question <em>\u201cAre we too damaged now to possibly connect, to ever reconnect?\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>Next track <em>\u2018How\u2019d You Have Me\u2019<\/em> and grungy single <em>\u2018I Will Steal You Back\u2019<\/em> both re-tread familiar territory, picking over the aftermath of a broken relationship, while <em>\u2018Lean\u2019 <\/em>acknowledges the feelings of dependence and selfishness that can cause a relationship to crumble. There\u2019s a strong story arc present in this record, and you can feel each part of the break-up as <strong>Jimmy Eat World<\/strong> display their wounds for all to see, relentlessly picking them open.<span>\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><em>\u2018No, Never\u2019 <\/em>seems to hint at infidelity, as Adkin\u2019s pleads<em> \u201cI\u2019d be lying if I told you it was just a kiss, I\u2019d be lying if I said there wasn\u2019t more to it\u201d<\/em> before declaring <em>\u201csay goodbye or get over it\u201d<\/em>.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>After so many break-up anthems, it\u2019s interesting to hear a song from the perspective of the guilty party. <em>\u2018Please Say No\u2019<\/em> seems to backpedal on this, as Adkin\u2019s ponders what could happen if <em>\u201cone last time we went and did this right.\u201d<\/em><span>\u00a0 <\/span>It conveys the mixed feelings of emotion that a split can bring, but without seeming contradictory.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>Choosing to turn their backs on their usual dramatic closing tracks, <strong>Jimmy Eat World<\/strong> finishes <em>\u2018Damage\u2019<\/em> with simple, stripped-back number <em>\u2018You Were Good<\/em><em>\u2019.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>Overall, <em>\u2018Damage\u2019<\/em>is essentially a ten-track ode to breaking up, with emotive lyrics piled over slick production and stirring guitars.
