Forget what people say about the sophomore album, I think album number three is more of a concern. A killer second album (and <\/span>Lemuria<\/strong>\u2019s<\/strong> <\/span>\u2018Pebble\u2019<\/em> certainly falls into this category) can breed complacency. Two great albums down and you\u2019re officially great as a band. <\/span>Lemuria<\/strong> were just that, great, from 2008\u2019s <\/span>\u2018Get Better\u2019<\/em>, through 2011\u2019s <\/span>\u2018Pebble\u2019<\/em>, and until June 17<\/span>th<\/sup> when this album drops in the UK they will be <\/span>great<\/em>. <\/span>\u2018The Distance Is So Big\u2019, <\/em>mixes things up a little, being so blindingly fantastic that the Buffalo trio have hit a whole new level of brilliance.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018The Distance Is So Big\u2019<\/span><\/em> is absolutely a Lemuria<\/strong> record at heart. With incredible vocal hooks and upbeat melody in spades immediately on show from the very first second of lead single \u2018Brilliant Dancer\u2019,\u00a0<\/em>a wide smiling sing-along waiting to happen. Both vocalists (Sheena Ozzella and Alex Kerns) put in perfect performances throughout and musically this album is just so much bigger in sound than either of the band\u2019s previous full lengths. The middle section of \u2018Congratulations Sex\u2019<\/em> is devastatingly well written, whilst \u2018Oahu, Hawaii\u2019<\/em> includes strings without ever straying into the strange and awkward. This track, immediately followed by another indie\/pop\/punk\/emo\/whatever we\u2019re calling Lemuria<\/strong> these days track in the form of \u2018Chihuly\u2019<\/em>, makes it seem at this midway point that the three-piece can do no wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n

I might be expected to follow this up with another angle, something to say that in 2013 Lemuria <\/strong>are fallible, that track thirteen is just egotistical rubbish for example. Unfortunately for the graduate in me who\u2019s a little desperate to avoid sounding too one sided, this just can\u2019t happen. Track thirteen as it happens is the closer, \u2018Ruby\u2019,<\/em> and it\u2019s yet another wonderful piece from a band who can do no wrong right now.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018The Distance Is So Big\u2019<\/span><\/em> is a collection of songs that sound like those recorded by a band who knew exactly what they wanted to make and why they wanted to make it \u2013 and I\u2019m so happy that they did.<\/span><\/p>\n
