{"id":28453,"date":"2013-06-09T14:36:35","date_gmt":"2013-06-09T14:36:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/album-review-the-hype-theory-captives\/"},"modified":"2018-03-17T15:17:47","modified_gmt":"2018-03-17T15:17:47","slug":"album-review-the-hype-theory-captives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/album-review-the-hype-theory-captives\/","title":{"rendered":"Album Review: The Hype Theory &#8211; Captives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/tumblr_inline_mo4q2sdamv1qztcot.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\">Essex-based, pop-fueled band <strong>The Hype Theory <\/strong>has delivered a pop-punk infused album, \u2018<em>Captives\u2019,\u00a0<\/em>their second full-length album since forming in 2010.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>Right away, the band explodes with a decidedly pop-punk track rife with superfast lyrics and quick fire drums on the first and title track \u2018<em>Captives\u2019.\u00a0<\/em>While <strong>The Hype Theory <\/strong>is not strictly a pop-punk band, they\u2019re experts at infusing pop-punk elements into the album, continuing with <em>\u2018More Dead Than Alive\u2019 <\/em>and \u2018<em>Believe Me, I\u2019m A Liar\u2019.<\/em><\/span><em><!-- more --><\/em><\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>While the band is rife with talent, they seem to miss the mark on a few tracks. With Katy Jackson\u2019s flawless voice and expertly executed instruments, they just don\u2019t seem to be pushing their creative limits. Tracks like \u2018<em>Heartsick\u2019, \u2018If You\u2019re Going Down (I\u2019m Going With You)\u2019 <\/em>and<em> \u2018Sattelite\u2019 <\/em>(among others)come off as generic. Clich\u00e9d lyrics, bland instruments, and unoriginal melodies muddy the talent this band has.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>Which is a shame, because on the other side of the coin, There are some really solid, exciting tracks on this album, the songs that tend towards more serious subjects with much more personal lyrics. \u2018<em>Reverie\u2019 <\/em>is an angsty, emotional track with an edgier sound. \u2018<em>Not Sorry\u2019 <\/em>is a bit melancholic, with Jackson\u2019s vocals coming off sweet and soft. This whole song is much simpler and lets the band shine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>A defining moment, though, comes at the very end of \u2018<em>Captives\u2019. \u2018Summer Rose\u2019 <\/em>begins as a quiet piano track, with very soft, very slow ethereal vocals and pretty harmonies. The subject matter is very serious (maybe a suicide, a young death, etc) and it is so full of emotions it really shows what the band is capable of.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>However talented <strong>The Hype Theory <\/strong>is, <em>\u2018Captives\u2019 <\/em>isn\u2019t a consistent example of this talent. There are some really great moments on this album, but others are lackluster and a bit boring.
