It\u2019s a clich\u00e9 start to any written piece featuring Bring Me The Horizon<\/strong><\/a>, but they do seem to be either loved or hated. There\u2019s no denying the facts though; they are massive. Latest release \u2018Sempiternal\u2019<\/em> is their fourth full length and has seen them join a major label whilst over in Belgium they\u2019ve played a very reputable spot on major punk festival Groezrock before returning to the UK for a short but successful run of shows.<\/p>\n There will always be a select number who will dislike what they do, but there\u2019s a part of me that thinks it\u2019s those critics that keep BMTH<\/strong> pushing further than they ever have previously. At\u00a0Already Heard<\/strong> we even had a discussion if the band were big enough or had been around long enough for them to be included in ‘Versus\u2019 and we quickly decided that they do.<\/p>\n It\u2019s without further ado then that I present to you our two contenders, Jenny Gagas and Callum McPhee. Our American sweetheart Jenny is fighting for what it is about ‘There Is A Hell\u2026\u2019<\/em> that really hits home for her, whilst Callum will be defending the band\u2019s newest release ‘Sempiternal\u2019<\/em> in his first \u201cVersus\u201d<\/strong> piece. I shouldn\u2019t say scared\u2026 more like horrified. It was all noise, all bark and no bite. But somehow, I think through friends playing hardcore in the background of university study sessions; I began to get a taste for it and soon I couldn\u2019t get enough. Eventually I couldn\u2019t listen to a song without screaming and worked my way up to Bring Me The Horizon. <\/strong>Someone gave me their copy of \u2018There is a Hell, Believe Me I\u2019ve Seen It. There is a Heaven, Let\u2019s Keep it a Secret\u2019 <\/em>and that album is what, surprisingly, got me through all those long nights of reading Shakespeare and Chaucer.<\/p>\n But why \u2018There is a Hell\u2026\u2019<\/em> ? I admit, I did have to backtrack and have a listen to \u2018Suicide Season,\u2019 <\/em>an album that couldn\u2019t have a better title. Unbridled metalcore at it\u2019s best, \u2018Suicide Season\u2019 <\/em>had all the intensity I could ever want. \u2018Diamonds Aren\u2019t Forever\u2019 <\/em>has that chant-like quality that is irresistible, a mantra screamed out as violently as possible with no restraint and as loudly as possible.<\/p>\n And that\u2019s where \u2018There is a Hell\u2019 <\/em>rises above. Bring Me The Horizon <\/strong>is one of those bands that is never content and is always pushing for a new sound or technique to revamp their identity. Lucky for us, because on their follow up to \u2018Suicide Season,\u2019 <\/em>they show an undeniable growth and evolution. They mastered restraint and gave us complexity and nuance.<\/p>\n Take the choice to include LIGHTS, a brilliant Canadian electropop queen with the most feminine voice, to an extremely harsh album. This juxtaposition set them apart from the run-of-the-mill and adds an ethereal, disembodied element to many songs on the album, my favorite being \u2018Crucify Me,\u2019 <\/em>a track that utterly pours over you with waves of emotion in the form of nonstop guitars, drums, and vicious screams but is balanced with a delicate vulnerability.<\/p>\n Yes, delicate vulnerability within a musical world where murder, suicide, blood, guts and the word \u201cfuck\u201d are tossed about with abandon. Take \u2018Don\u2019t Go\u2019 <\/em>as the ultimate example. Following up a super heavy song literally called \u2018Fuck,\u2019 \u2018Don\u2019t Go\u2019<\/em> let\u2019s us see a different side of Bring Me The Horizon<\/strong>: \u201cTell me that you need me \u2018cause I love you so much. Say you\u2019ll never leave me \u2018cause I need you so much.\u201d Delicate vulnerability.<\/p>\n And this is why this album is the band\u2019s best work. Their latest release, \u2018Sempiternal\u2019 <\/em>retains all of the qualities I love about \u2018There is a Hell<\/em>,\u2019 and Oliver Sykes adds his surprisingly nice clean vocals, a huge step in the band\u2019s continual evolution. But that balance of brutality and vulnerability, heavy verses light element that I have come to love isn\u2019t quite there. But that\u2019s the beauty of a band unafraid of changing; you never know what they\u2019ll come up with next.<\/p>\n When a band\u02bcs every new album blows away all expectations every time, it\u02bcs really hard\u00a0to know what to expect, and Bring Me The Horizon<\/strong>\u02bcs move to a major label hasn\u02bct\u00a0hindered their progression or sound in any way at all.<\/p>\n From the teaser of \u02bbShadow Moses\u02bc<\/em> on their website I knew this was going to be\u00a0something special, and it was the \ufb01rst time in quite some time that the anticipation of an\u00a0album got me truly excited. Then, \u02bbShadow Moses\u02bc<\/em> was released, and everything I had\u00a0been hoping for without even knowing what to expect had been ful\ufb01lled and then some.<\/p>\n Oli Sykes has become the type of band member who is an entity of his own, forgetting he\u00a0actually is a vocalist at times due to him becoming a poster boy, a somewhat iconic \ufb01gure,\u00a0to the point where you\u02bcre listening to the album and you hear singing and wonder \u02bbwho\u02bcve\u00a0they got singing?!\u02bc. I then realised Oli was actually singing, and that\u02bcs when I realised this\u00a0album had took on a whole new level of the sort of progression we\u02bcve all grown\u00a0accustomed to with BMTH<\/strong>.<\/p>\n \u02bbCan You Feel My Heart\u02bc<\/em> opens the album, not hesitating to ease in the addition of new\u00a0member Jordan Fish on keyboard\/synthesizer. With Oli having shouted and screamed for the past 3 albums the singing is not expected, but having been worked on extensively with\u00a0Jordan it seems to have worked out well and \ufb01ts the music perfectly.<\/p>\n The third release from the album \u02bbSleepwalking\u02bc<\/em> takes the sound in another direction, with\u00a0the shouting\/screaming being expressed melodically, and the singing and keyboard\u00a0addition gives it a Linkin Park edge. Echoed in \u02bbGo To Hell For Heaven\u02bcs Sake\u02bc<\/em> and \u02bbSeen\u00a0<\/em>It All Before\u02bc<\/em>, the maturer, more melodic touch to the sound makes the album more\u00a0accessible, but still includes the riffs and guitar work that de\ufb01nes the heavy sound they\u02bcre\u00a0known for.<\/p>\n With the album being leaked, the release date was brought forward to April 1st, and the album\u00a0was streamed online of\ufb01cially by the band. I\u02bcm not ashamed to admit I listened to it\u00a0repeatedly and found something more to love about every song with every new listen.<\/p>\n From the beginning to the end there is something for all music fans, including the anthem\u00a0\u02bbAntivist\u02bc<\/em>, a song referring to the type of people who sit behind a computer and voice their\u00a0opinion – \u201cIf you really believe in the words that you preach, get off your screens and on to\u00a0the streets\u201d.
