Banquets<\/strong> burst onto the scene two years ago with their excellent debut album \u2018Top Button, Bottom Shelf\u2019<\/em> and their instantly likeable brand of pop-punk took me a little by surprise. I\u2019d grown jaded of hearing the same types of bands churning out the same type of material but this felt fresh, fast and fun again. As a result I\u2019d really anticipated the follow up, \u2018Banquets\u2019<\/em>, and had hoped that it would be the album of my summer.<\/p>\n

\u2018Little Shallow\u2019<\/em> is a fairly low key start to the album in truth \u2013 it\u2019s solid but predictable, and that really sets the tone of the album. \u2018Big Big Waves\u2019<\/em> continues in the same vein too. It\u2019s easy to listen to, perfectly inoffensive, modern pop-punk that gets you tapping your foot. Fortunately the band up their game a little by the time we hit \u2018Call It A Comeback\u2019<\/em> which, whether they meant to or not, is as close to the material on their debut album as we can hope for. It\u2019s the excellent vocal melodies and soaring guitar riffs that had me hitting repeat previously.<\/p>\n

From there the album does have plenty of merit, in particular the instrumental opening to \u2018March 19th’<\/em> the Over It inspired fast skate punk vibe to \u2018Stars and Stops\u2019<\/em> and the big guitar riff that opens \u2018The Flicker And The Flame\u2019<\/em>. These tracks are certainly enough to win the band new fans and hopefully see them return to Europe sooner, especially with the help of the folk at Disconnect Disconnect<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

I like Banquets<\/strong>, I really do\u2026 and I\u2019d love to give \u2018Banquets\u2019<\/em> a glowing review here. I just can\u2019t shake the feeling that I\u2019ve heard this all before though and I don\u2019t really get that sense of progression that I was hoping for. It\u2019s very reminiscent of some of the earlier Hit The Lights tracks but often without that huge chorus or that sense of frenzied excitement.<\/p>\n

\u2018Banquets\u2019<\/em> is a good record by a creditable band\u2026but for me it\u2019s ultimately disappointing when compared to \u2018Top Button, Bottom Shelf\u2019<\/em>.<\/p>\n
