Shrouded in mystery, <b>Guillotine<\/b>, is letting their music do the talking. Since emerging late last year after a curious campaign emphasising their message of <i>\u201cwe\u2019ll be ok here\u201d<\/i>, the quartet have been causing the stir with their brand of emotional alt-rock. Now their debut EP, <i>\u2018Sapphire\u2019<\/i>, has finally arrived, we can paint an intriguing picture of what <b>Guillotine<\/b> are all about.<\/p>\n<p><i>\u2018Butterflies\u2019<\/i> opens proceedings with calming guitars before giving way to stiff drum work and impassioned vocals. <i>\u201cI was already drifting away because you left me here like an old dog in the rain,\u201d<\/i> proclaims Guillotine\u2019s vocalist. Add a groove-laden bassline and driving guitars, and you\u2019re left with a positive start.<\/p>\n<p><!-- more --><\/p>\n<p>The title track follows and still sounds as thrilling as when it arrived last Autumn. The combination of winding guitars, confessional lyrics and its overall build leaves you hooked. By the time the unknown singer screams <i>\u201cit\u2019s inside of me\u201d<\/i> alongside bombastic drums, you\u2019re sure to be convinced that the remainder of the EP won\u2019t disappoint.<\/p>\n<p>Admittedly, <b>Guillotine<\/b>\u2019s style firmly fits in the box of <i>\u201csounds like Brand New\u201d<\/i>. <i>&#8216;Yellowknife\u2019<\/i> eases along at a lethargic pace, playing off the expected quiet-loud-louder dynamic. While closing track <i>&#8216;Christmas\u2019<\/i> drifts in before exploding with ringing percussion, stirring guitars and more emotionally releasing vocals. It\u2019s a familiar formula, but is as effective as ever. Elsewhere, <i>&#8216;Goodbye\u2019<\/i> hints at a more upbeat and loose approach with sonic guitars and pounding drums dominating towards its conclusion.<\/p>\n<p>For a debut EP, <b>Guillotine<\/b> have provided a consistent set that leaves you wanting more.
