\"CaneArriving just 18 months on from their debut album, Louisiana quartet Cane Hill<\/b> have returned for a second crack at the whip. Having led an apparent \u201cnu-metal revival\u201d on \u2018Smile\u2019<\/i>, ‘Too Far Gone\u2019<\/i> sees use of their collective and personal experiences to produce a record that builds on their previous foundations. Most notably, the realisation of the long-term damage their occasional use of LSD and alcohol could have serves as the spine of what becomes ‘Too Far Gone\u2019<\/i>.<\/p>\n

Although they\u2019ve often denied their nu-metal tendencies, KoRn-esque intensity and Slipknot-inspired blasts suggest Cane Hill<\/b> have accepted and even embraced, being linked to the once-popular genre. The titular track kicks off ‘Too Far Gone\u2019<\/i> with a heavy stomp as Elijah Witt proclaims \u201care you mad you can\u2019t be like me?\u201d<\/i> ‘Lord of Flies\u2019<\/i> chugs along in a similar fashion and brings an effective hook to the table. While ‘It Follows\u2019<\/i> could easily be mistaken for a KoRn song.<\/p>\n

For all their nu-metal characteristics, Cane Hill<\/b> do explore their possibilities throughout ‘Too Far Gone\u2019<\/i>. ‘Singing In the Swamp\u2019<\/i> is a stirring slab of 90s grunge rock before ‘Erased\u2019<\/i> treads along with intimate vocals and an atmospheric bassline. It\u2019s here where Witt\u2019s versatility as a vocal becomes apparent. Alongside ‘Why?\u2019<\/i>, he impressively executes soaring melodies in front a backdrop of wiry guitars.<\/p>\n

Undoubtedly, there is an intensity that threads ‘Too Far Gone\u2019<\/i> together. ’10 Cents\u2019<\/i> is a thrashing blast as Witt bluntly confesses \u201call my heroes are dead now\u201d<\/i>; a realisation of the result of his sobriety. ‘Hateful\u2019<\/i> pulsates with a mix of frantic gang vocals and James Barnett\u2019s twisting guitars. While ‘The End\u2019<\/i> is carried with a doom-laden cloud over it.<\/p>\n

If Cane Hill<\/b> are aiming to shake off the nu-metal tag, then they\u2019re heading in the right direction. Having been heavily hyped up in the past, they\u2019re gradually living up to their potential. ‘Too Far Gone\u2019<\/i> captures a band in a promising transition.<\/p>\n
