{"id":29636,"date":"2013-04-24T09:53:02","date_gmt":"2013-04-24T09:53:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/album-review-nightmares-for-a-week-civilian-war\/"},"modified":"2018-03-17T15:15:17","modified_gmt":"2018-03-17T15:15:17","slug":"album-review-nightmares-for-a-week-civilian-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/album-review-nightmares-for-a-week-civilian-war\/","title":{"rendered":"Album Review: Nightmares For A Week &#8211; Civilian War"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/alreadyheard.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/tumblr_inline_mloa3qc9Aq1qztcot.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"\">\u2018Civilian War\u2019<\/em>\u00a0is a shimmering triumph of a record, and I didn\u2019t want to waste any time in telling you. <strong>Nightmares For A Week<\/strong>&lsquo;s\u00a0brand of punk-rock tinged with a decidedly alt-country vibe sounds huge from the first track and doesn\u2019t let up, putting this album in serious contention for my release of the year already.\u00a0 It swings from care free Friday night drinking tracks to more philosophical takes on life and death, yet sung with a bright and positive approach throughout. It\u2019s a fantastic effort and I\u2019m not surprised by that as 2010\u2019s debut\u00a0<em>\u2018Don\u2019t Die\u2019<\/em>\u00a0took me on a similar journey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Tracks such as \u2018<em>Down In the Streets\u2019<\/em> and <em>\u2018Dead Men\u2019 <\/em>aren\u2019t a dramatic departure from previous material but the band&rsquo;s charismatic vocals, punchy riffs and contagious lyrics are evident throughout.\u00a0 They\u2019re a great introduction to the band for any new listeners too. <em>\u2018We\u2019ll Do Our Worst, Lord\u2019<\/em> is perhaps a well worked bridge away from being a leading single<em>. \u2018Red Eyes\u2019<\/em> picks up from there though with the type of empathic chorus that I\u2019ve come to expect from the band. <!-- more --><\/p>\n<p>&lt;a href=&ldquo;http:\/\/brokenenglishrecords.bandcamp.com\/album\/civilian-war&rdquo; data-mce-href=&ldquo;http:\/\/brokenenglishrecords.bandcamp.com\/album\/civilian-war&rdquo;&gt;Civilian War by Nightmares for a Week&lt;\/a&gt;<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what I love about <strong>Nightmares For A Week<\/strong>, you never have to wait long for a moment of real unbridled euphoria. Just when you think you\u2019ve found the highlight of the album\u2026another track comes along that runs it very close. So with that in mind, up steps \u2018<em>The Destroyers\u2019 <\/em>and the bar is lifted even higher.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The album does have a few quieter moments \u2013 notably in <em>\u2018Vet\u2019<\/em> and <em>\u2018Cancer Kills\u2019<\/em>, which build the atmosphere more than anything. They aren\u2019t as memorable as their equivalents on <em>\u2018Don\u2019t Die\u2019<\/em> (I\u2019m talking about <em>\u2018Our Vessel\u2019<\/em> and the title track) and as the album is only ten tracks long it does feel like a missed opportunity here.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The New York based band are the positive, life affirming, scruffier younger brother to Mumford And Sons. Whilst Marcus Mumford and friends are tugging on the heart strings with their hugely atmospheric ballads, <strong>Nightmares For A Week<\/strong> are a few beats quicker and probably a few drinks further into their nights.
